A surface cold front and powerful upper level disturbance moved across northern New York during the evening hours of May 1st with a line of strong to severe thunderstorms.|These thunderstorms produced lots of tree and power line damage as well as some light structural damage to a few roofs in St. Lawrence county.

A mid-atmospheric wind core and disturbance moved ahead of the surface cold front into a hot, humid and very unstable air mass across northern New York during the late afternoon and evening hours of July 19th. Widespread wind damage in the form of downed trees and power lines that fell on vehicles and structures across the region. This widespread severe wind event was the largest in more than a year for much of northern New York.

Low pressure off the Delmarva Peninsula on October 14th intensified rapidly into a strong Nor'easter as it moved across southeast Massachusetts into the Gulf of Maine on the 15th. There were three components to this storm...heavy rainfall, first snowfall of the season in the higher elevations and strong winds.||Strong north winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts approaching 50 mph battered the Champlain Valley for much of the late morning and afternoon hours of October 15th. This caused scattered damage to trees and tree limbs with isolated to scattered power outages. It also caused the ferries between Vermont and New York to shut down operations for several hours.||In addition, rainfall totals across the Champlain Valley ranged from 1.5 to 4 inches with minor street and small stream flooding. Snowfall was largely confined to elevations above 2000 feet with 3 to 7 inches being reported.

On July 21st, a developing surface low across the Great Lakes traveled along a stationary boundary draped across the North Country. Surface conditions became increasingly unstable during the afternoon with temperatures in the 80s and dewpoints in the 60s and lower 70s. More importantly, an unseasonably strong mid-atmospheric shortwave and winds aloft tracked across this region as well, which allowed for thunderstorms to develop rapidly, intensify and maintain longevity.||During the afternoon, scattered to numerous thunderstorms developed and/or traveled across northern New York. Several storms strengthened into supercells that produced widespread wind damage to trees, power poles and structures as well as large hail upwards to golf ball size in diameter.||Some of the communities largely affected were Potsdam, Ogdensburg, Bangor, Brushton and Plattsburgh.

Several mid-atmospheric impulses traveled along a stationary boundary across northern New York during the early afternoon and evening hours of July 18th. This stationary boundary separated warm, humid air across much of New York from cooler, drier air across the international border with Canada.||The first round of thunderstorms developed during the early afternoon along the Canadian-northern New York border in northern Franklin county and moved across Clinton county toward Vermont. Numerous reports of downed trees and power lines between Chateaugay (Franklin county) and Chazy (Clinton county).||A second round of severe thunderstorms moved across St. Lawrence and northern Franklin counties during the evening. Numerous reports of downed trees causing downed power lines and some structural damage in the Norfolk, Norwood region as well as affecting the Malone (Franklin county) area.

A very energetic mid-atmospheric disturbance moved across the Great Lakes during the afternoon and evening of June 10th. This developed a surface low along a cold front, which moved across northern New York during the afternoon. These features moved across a very warm, humid and unstable airmass draped across New York that resulted in two rounds of widespread severe thunderstorms.||The first round moved across northern New York during the early afternoon hours and the second round occurred during the early evening.||In northern New York (Clinton, Essex, Franklin and St. Lawrence counties)...hundreds to thousands of trees were damaged, downed or uprooted which caused downed power lines, fires and structural damage to buildings and vehicles. Tens of thousands of customers lost power due to the storms, with some outages that lasted several days. Some communities affected included Potsdam, Parishville and Colton (St. Lawrence county), Moira, Malone and Vermontville (Franklin county), Peru, Plattsburgh and Ellenburg (Clinton county) as well as Wilmington, Westport and Jay (Essex county).||Several fallen trees resulted in injuries and one death resulted from a motorcyclist driving into a downed tree across the road in Wilmington (Essex county).

Scattered thunderstorms developed in a moderately unstable airmass across the Champlain Valley of New York during the afternoon of the 16th. One thunderstorm developed in a favorable, highly sheared wind environment which eventually intensified into a supercell thunderstorm across Clinton county, NY. This supercell thunderstorm moved across the New York locations of Jericho, Keesville, northern Plattsburgh and Cumberlandhead, before heading into Lake Champlain and eventually Vermont. Significant straight-line wind damage (estimated between 60 and 80 mph) in the form of snapped, uprooted and downed trees, downed power lines and structural damage such as trees on houses as well as roof shingles and siding blown off. Also, several boats and docks were damaged in local marina. Large hail was also reported.

A mid atmospheric disturbance and surface trough moved into a warm and unstable airmass across northern New York during the afternoon of the 19th. Scattered thunderstorms developed during the mid to late afternoon hours and produced localized wind damage in the form of downed trees and powerlines. Some communities affected included; Malone (Franklin county), Saranac (Clinton county) and Westport (Essex county).

An unseasonably strong mid-level atmospheric disturbance moved across a marginally unstable airmass across northern New York during the early afternoon of the 5th. This resulted in the development of showers and a few scattered thunderstorms, including a severe thunderstorm which moved across the towns of Morrisonville and Beekmantown in Clinton county. This storm produced damaging winds that knocked down tree limbs and power lines, as well as a lightning strike that caused a small fire at a home in Beekmantown.

A backdoor cold front and mid-level disturbance moved into a moderately unstable airmass during the afternoon of the 2nd and resulted in the development of showers and thunderstorms across northern New York. Some of these thunderstorms were locally severe, which produced damaging winds that knocked down trees and powerlines in Norwood, Parishville (St. Lawrence county) and Bloomingdale (Essex county) as well as large hail of 3/4 inch diameter or greater in Peru (Clinton county), Stockholm Center (St. Lawrence county), Rainbow Lake (Franklin county) and up to half-dollar size hail in Saranac Lake (Franklin county).

A relatively strong westerly low-level flow interacted with a moderately unstable airmass across northern New York on the afternoon of the 7th. The end result was scattered thunderstorms across the region, including a supercell structure that developed over Clinton county. Numerous trees and powerlines were downed by damaging winds across Chazy, including Miner Farm Road, Fiske Road, North Farm Road and Route 9. There was some property damage due to trees falling on structures and vehicles as well as nickel size hail. The most significant damage occurred at the 700 acre Chazy Orchards, where damaging winds knocked down trees, branches and apples along with large hail (shy of golfball size) that destroyed the upcoming apple crop.

On the early afternoon of the 31st, a mid-level atmospheric disturbance and surface cold front encountered a warm and unstable airmass across northern New York and resulted in the development of thunderstorms. In Clinton county, some of these thunderstorms were locally severe. Nickel size hail was reported in Plattsburgh as well as several reports of pea size hail and power outages in Plattsburgh and Beekmantown.

A strong storm system over the northern Great Lakes region on the morning of November 6th moved northeast into Canada. It reached northern Quebec the late night of November 6th. The associated cold front moved west to east across the area during the late afternoon and evening of November 6th. Strong thunderstorms developed along and ahead of this front, and a few became severe as they transported strong winds aloft to the surface. Trees and power lines were blown down in the Clinton county town of Dannemora. Power outages were reported.

Earlier, a lightning strike destroyed a power transformer, with numerous power outages.

A cold front across southern Quebec the morning of Wednesday, August 10th moved southeast into northern portions of New York and Vermont during the late Afternoon. This front was preceded and accompanied by thunderstorms. A few of the storms were severe, with trees and power lines blown down in the town of Champlain, NY.

A cold front extended from northern Maine to extreme northern New York and then into Pennsylvania early on Friday, July 22. The front helped trigger thunderstorms as it moved across northern NY by early afternoon. Thunderstorms developed along a boundary in northeast NY in the late morning and they quickly intensified into severe thunderstorms with strong winds and large hail as they moved east and southeast. across the area. A spotter reported 3/4 inch hail just northwest of Schuyler Falls, and power was out in Peru, NY.

A low pressure system near James Bay, Canada on the morning of July 1 moved east across Quebec. The associated cold front in the central Great Lakes Thursday morning, July 1st, moved into northern New York during the afternoon. The cold front continued east into northern Vermont during the evening of the 1st of July. Thunderstorms preceded and accompanied the front. Some of the storms were severe with large hail and/or strong winds. In Rouses Pt, NY, hail 1 inch in diameter fell. Just to the west of Rouses Pt, power lines were blown down on Rte 11.

A cold front moved from the Great Lakes region early Friday (May 31st) and moved across northern New York during the afternoon of May 31st. This front was preceded and accompanied by thunderstorms. Severe thunderstorms moved across Clinton county of New York with power lines blown down in Altona.

Primary storm system moved across southern Canada during Thursday, December 6th. Gusty winds occurred with passage of the associated cold front during the morning and early afternoon. A number of locations reported wind gusts over 34 mph (30 kts). A few wind gust reports included: In St Lawrence county, Canton with 46 mph (40 kts) while Massena had 44 mph (38 kts). In Clinton county, Plattsburgh had 39 mph (34 kts) while in Essex county Saranac Lake reported 37 mph (32 kts). In addition, scattered power outages were reported in Malone located in Franklin county.
