A slow moving area of low pressure west of the mountains brought abundant moisture into the Carolinas. Showers and thunderstorms developed across western and central North Carolina during the afternoon hours, producing numerous reports of downed trees and power lines. Training thunderstorms also produced minor flooding in the Greensboro area.

A warm front draped from the Great Lakes into the Ohio Valley led to morning showers and thunderstorms across the Ohio Valley early in the day. These showers and storms continued to progress southward toward central North Carolina in the evening hours, especially across the northwest, central, and southern Piedmont. The storms did not completely clear the area until the early overnight hours, as storms by then moved into South Carolina. There were numerous reports of trees and power lines down across Guilford, Forsyth, and Davidson Counties, as well as wind damage reports over Granville, Person, and Franklin Counties. Isolated flash flooding also occurred in parts of Forsyth County.

Moisture overspread the area from the southwest as a southern stream Miller-B low pressure system tracked from the lower Mississippi Valley to the SE US Coast. |The moist warm air moving atop a strong wedge of shallow cold air near the surface along the eastern slopes of the southern Appalachians produced predominately freezing rain and significant icing across the northwest and northern portions of the NC Piedmont beginning Saturday night(January 12) before ending Sunday morning (January 13). The heaviest ice accrual was reported along and north of the Interstate 85 corridor, where a quarter to one-third of an inch of ice toppled numerous trees and leaving thousands without power.

A strong surface low deepening off the Carolina coast brought a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain to the northern-northwestern Piedmont counties. Snowfall amounts of 4 to 7 inches fell Forsyth, Person and Guilford counties. Just to the south and east of this area, a corridor of mainly sleet mixed with freezing rain produced significant icing of a quarter to half inch. This icing produced widespread downed trees and power outages over the northwest Piedmont. At the peak of the storm, over a 400,000 customers were without power. A natural disaster was declared in 7 |counties across the Raleigh CWA that were impacted by this storm.

A powerful upper level storm system moved across the region, producing rainfall at the onset of the event which changed to snow as the upper low moved across the region and colder air moved into the region behind it. In addition, numerous reports of strong winds and downed trees were received around the time of the change-over from rain to snow.
