A National Weather Service survey team found that an EF-1 tornado with peak winds of 90 mph and a maximum path width of 100 yards began along the Flint River on the Meriwether-Upson County line south-southeast of Woodbury. Approximately 100 trees and several power poles were snapped or blown down. A camper was blown over and a boat was blown into a tree. Episodes

August 31, 2008

Hurricane Gustav was moving west through the eastern Gulf of Mexico. A large upper ridge was anchored over most of the eastern U.S., which kept Hurricane Gustav on a westward track. Although the hurricane remained well south of north and central Georgia, the hurricane was so large that the outer most rain bands fired up during the afternoon resulting in scattered thunderstorms across central Georgia. The thunderstorms produced gusty winds, frequent lightning, and heavy rain. While none became severe, Upson county did experience a lightning fire and downed power lines as a result of one of these thunderstorms.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
