Episodes

April 24, 2008

The Four Mile Road Fire developed early in the afternoon on the 24th, a few miles south-southeast of Grayling. Sparks from a passing train were a possible cause. It was a warm, dry, windy day, and a Red Flag Warning was in effect. The fire quickly expanded as it raced to the northwest, crossing I-75 by late afternoon between the Four Mile Road and I-75 Business Loop exits. Eventually, 1300 acres were burned, and the fire threatened the Ramada Inn and Admiral gas station on the far south end of Grayling. However, the only structures lost were about half a dozen cabins near the Simpson Lakes, about two miles south of downtown Grayling. Damage at the Grayling Game Club was near $287,000. In addition, a State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) transport truck, used to bring bulldozers to the fire line, was claimed by the fire. Total cost of the fire to the DNR was $619,000. This included both the cost of suppressing the fire, and damage done to timber and the transport. (Note that fire suppression costs are not considered damages done by the fire.) Power was lost in Grayling, fifty homes were evacuated, and I-75 was closed for several hours. The fire slowed considerably that evening as winds and temperatures decreased. Several periods of rain, beginning that night and continuing into the night of the 25th, helped extinguish the blaze.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
