January 24, 2023 - Winter Weather

Precipitation started as rain during the afternoon of January 24th before changing over to snow during the late afternoon, with the snow then continuing into the morning of January 25th. Widespread snow amounts between 3.5 and 4.5 inches fell across the county. A public report of a measured storm total of 4.5 inches of snow was received from Ava, with a measured 3.7 inches from a CoCoRaHS observer 3.7 miles SSE of Mansfield. Roads became snow covered and slippery. Around 390 power outages also occurred across the county due to the heavy snow. Some schools had early release on January 24th, with numerous schools closed on January 25th.

Multiple reports were received from several sources across the county. Numerous trees, power lines and poles were reported down with several reports of roads closed with fallen debris. Reports were received from or near the towns of Ava, Rome, Dogwood, Brown Branch, Mt. Zion and Gentryville. Multiple State Highways were impacted with fallen debris including 76, 14, 5, K and B along with several county roads. No structural damages or injuries were reported.

A severe storm left behind a path of destruction over portions of Douglas County. An airport hangar near Ava was destroyed with debris scattered over a 200-yard area on the airport property. Several homes and cars in a subdivision north of Ava endured damage from hail along with numerous trees and power lines blown down.
