Power Outage in Nashville, AR

Numerous trees and power lines downed throughout Howard County, including in the city of Nashville.

The roof of the Sewage Treatment Plant in South Nashville was peeled off by strong winds. The Nashville Fire Department removed trees that blocked many county roads and main highways in the Nashville area. A power pole was knocked down and had to be replaced by electric crews.

Electric poles and power lines were downed west of Nashville on Highway 371 West. Power lines were also downed near the intersection of Highway 371 and Highway 26 and in between Nashville and Center Point.

Several chicken houses and barns were damaged in the Athens community. Trees and power lines were downed in the area as well.

A damage survey was completed in Howard County Arkansas and it was determined that the damage was consistent with that of an EF2 tornado. The most extensive damage was located on the southwest side of Nashville at the D&J Mobile Home Park. Five mobile homes were completely destroyed. There were 2 fatalities in this mobile home park and 8 additional injuries. There were 40 to 60 homes suffering minor to moderate damage from the tornado...mainly from fallen trees. Other damage consisted of numerous trees snapped and/or uprooted with power lines downed as well. The Governor of Arkansas was given a tour of the damage areas on the ground and in the air.

A tree was downed north of Hwy. 26 and 369 junction, four miles east of Centerpoint. Powerlines were also downed in the area.

This tornado initially touched down near an open field, approximately 1.5 mile south of Centerpoint, along Coonridge Road. Travelling slightly east of due north, the tornado snapped and uprooted numerous pine and oak trees. The most significant damage occurred at a single-family residence 0.75 mile north of the touchdown, where the house suffered a considerable amount of damage. The garage, roof, and many supporting walls were removed from the foundation. All windows not completely blown out by the storm were still shattered. A barn adjacent to the house had a considerable loss of roofing material but, although shifted off its foundation, remained largely intact. Trees and powerlines were snapped or uprooted as the storm moved through the community of Centerpoint before lifting along Billings Road, about 0.25 mile east of SR-4. There was one injury at the residence but the injury was not life threatening. The Arkansas governor declared Howard County a disaster area because of the tornado damage in the county.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Ike resulted in widespread trees and power lines downed throughout all of Howard County, Arkansas. Power outages were widespread as well with numerous residents without power during the height of the storm and days afterward. A roof and a carport was damaged to some homes across the southern portion of the county and several barns and chicken houses were destroyed. A measured wind gust of 71 mph was reported by local Ham Radio Operators in the town of Nashville, Arkansas. A measured wind gust of 62 mph was reported by a local ham radio operator in Saratoga, Arkansas. A large tree fell across a home on Pump Springs Road in Nashville, Arkansas. Several other homes were damaged from fallen debris across the county.

Nashville and surrounding rural areas of Howard County had numerous trees and power lines down. Many homes suffered wind damage as well as many chicken houses.

Numerous trees and power lines were toppled from Saratoga to the Mt Carmel area which is west of Center Point. One tree fell across a house on Cornbrige Road near York Chapel Road.

After trying to recover from an ice storm two week earlier in the month, another even more devastating ice storm struck all of southwest Arkansas. Freezing rain resulted in ice accumulations ranging from 1/4 inch to as much as 6 inches. After taking a tour of the state, the Governor of Arkansas used words such as apocalyptic and cataclysmic to describe the damage. Power was knocked out across all of southwest Arkansas with nearly 300,000 homes and business without power due to thousands of trees and 2500 power poles either broken or toppled. Utility crews from 23 different states were summoned to help repair lines. Some residents were without power as late as the middle of January 2001.

An arctic air mass spilled southward out of the central plains and into the lower Mississippi Valley. This cold, surface air mass was overrun by a warm humid air mass which combined with a strong upper level storm system across west Texas. the result was widespread freezing rain across all of southwest Arkansas. The precipitation was a mixture of freezing rain, sleet and some light snow northwest of a Texarkana to Prescott Arkansas line while further east the precipitation was all freezing rain. Ice accumulations of two to four inches were common. An estimated 235,000 residents lost electrical power due to ice covered power lines snapping or ice covered trees splitting and falling across the lines. The was the worst storm in the history of the power companies suppling the power as far as damage but not total ice accumulations. A total of 29 transmission lines atop "H" shaped steel towers were snapped due to the weight of the ice. Numerous traffic accidents were also reported and many homes suffered damage from fallen trees and tree limbs. As a result, the Governor of Arkansas declared a State of Emergency for all of southwest Arkansas. Cleanup costs along reached upwards of 15 million dollars. Several Pine Plantations throughout southwest Arkansas suffered catastrophic damage from the ice storm with upwards of 25 million dollars worth of young trees destroyed.
