A deep southwesterly flow aloft prevailed across the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley on January 30th-February 2nd, ahead of a strong upper level low pressure system that drifted through Southern California, the Desert Southwest into Northern Mexico. Meanwhile, a strong but shallow arctic cold front shifted south through the Southern Plains on January 29th-30th, before slowing significantly in the higher terrain of the Ouachitas of Southeast Oklahoma and Western Arkansas. Weak upper level disturbances embedded in this flow ahead of the low resulted in widespread sleet and freezing rain across much of the Southern Plains given the warm air above this shallow, freezing air mass, with areas of light freezing rain affecting portions of East Texas, extreme Southeast Oklahoma, and Southwest Arkansas on January 30th-February 2nd. Temperatures through the period ranged from a couple of degrees either side of the freezing mark across portions of East Texas, with light ice accumulations ranging from a glaze up to a tenth of an inch, mainly on elevated objects such as bridges and overpasses, trees and power lines. ||The following are freezing rain reports across various counties in East Texas:||Bowie County: Texarkana: 0.01 inches.|Cass County: Linden: 0.01 inches.|Morris County: Omaha: 0.01 inches.|Titus County: Mount Pleasant: 0.01 inches.|Camp County: Pittsburg: 0.01 inches.|Upshur County: 4ESE Gilmer: 0.05 inches.|Cherokee County: 9W Rusk: 0.10 inches.

A deep southwesterly flow aloft prevailed across the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley on January 30th-31st, ahead of a strong upper level low pressure system that drifted through Southern California, the Desert Southwest into Northern Mexico. Meanwhile, a strong but shallow arctic cold front shifted south through the Southern Plains on the 29th-30th, before slowing significantly in the higher terrain of the Ouachitas of Southeast Oklahoma and Western Arkansas. Weak upper level disturbances embedded in this flow ahead of the low resulted in widespread sleet and freezing rain across much of the Southern Plains given the warm air above this shallow, freezing air mass, with areas of light freezing rain affecting portions of East Texas, extreme Southeast Oklahoma, and Southwest Arkansas on the 30th-31st. Temperatures through the period ranged from a couple of degrees either side of the freezing mark across portions of East Texas, with light ice accumulations ranging from a glaze up to a tenth of an inch, mainly on elevated objects such as bridges and overpasses, trees and power lines. This extended duration of freezing rain persisted into the first couple days of February across these areas.||The following are freezing rain reports across various counties in East Texas:||Bowie County: Texarkana: 0.01 inches. |Cass County: Linden: 0.01 inches. |Morris County: Omaha: 0.01 inches. |Titus County: Mount Pleasant: 0.01 inches. |Camp County: Pittsburg: 0.01 inches. |Upshur County: 4ESE Gilmer: 0.05 inches. |Cherokee County: 9W Rusk: 0.10 inches.

On the heels of the first winter storm and historically cold temperatures observed earlier in the week across all of the Southern Plains and much of the Lower Mississippi Valley, a second significant winter storm developed across much of these areas from February 16th-17th, with areas of snow (some heavy) falling across Northeast Texas. Strong forcing and moisture associated with the next upper level trough to move atop the extensive arctic air mass in place resulted in widespread snowfall totals of two to five inches falling across Red River, Franklin, Wood, Titus, Camp, and Morris Counties, with higher amounts up to 10 inches observed across Central and Eastern Bowie County. ||The following are snowfall totals that were recorded at various locations across portions of extreme Northeast Texas from this second winter storm:||Red River County: 5 NNW Avery: 3.0 inches. ||Bowie County: 1 WNW Wake Village: 9.7 inches, Texarkana: 9.5 inches, New Boston: 4.0 inches, Dekalb: 2.3 inches, 2 E Dekalb: 1.6 inches. ||Morris County: Daingerfield: 9.0 inches, Lone Star: 3.5 inches. ||Titus County: Mount Pleasant: 3.8 inches. ||Franklin County: Mount Vernon: 2.4 inches. ||Wood County: 1 SSW Winnsboro: 4.0 inches, 7 N Quitman: 3.5 inches, Mineola: 2.5 inches. ||When combined with the previous winter storm on the 14th-15th, widespread snowfall totals of ten to fifteen inches were observed across these counties. These totals crippled the region, making driving nearly impossible, with rolling blackouts further aggravated by the additional power outages the snows were responsible for. In addition, the weight of the snow from these two back to back winter storms also resulted in numerous metal carport canopies collapsing across extreme Northeast Texas, with many homes and cars damaged.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Cristobal lifted north across Central and Eastern Louisiana during the daytime hours of June 8th after making landfall along the Southern Louisiana coast during the evening hours of the 7th. Scattered showers and a few isolated thunderstorms developed throughout the afternoon and rotated west southwest around the center of circulation as it entered extreme Southern Arkansas during the late afternoon hours. Precipitation loading resulted in isolated instances of damaging winds across Bowie County Texas, where several trees were snapped or had fallen on homes in Dekalb, power lines were downed, and the metal roof of a large storage barn was peeled back.

December 1, 2018

A vigorous upper level trough moved into the Southern Plains during the late afternoon, evening and overnight hours of November 30th-December 1st. Upper level forcing in response to this disturbance moved into the Middle Red River Valley of Northeast Texas, Southeast Oklahoma and Southwest Arkansas during the evening hours of November 30th and strong to severe thunderstorms erupted north and west of the Interstate 30 Corridor as a result. The atmosphere was moderately unstable for the last day in November but strong deep layer and low level directional shear was present. This resulted in supercell type thunderstorms and bowing thunderstorm complexes, one of which moved across Northeast Texas into Southeast Oklahoma and Southwest Arkansas producing widespread wind damage all along its track. Numerous trees and power lines were downed with these storms before they exited Northeast Texas during the early morning hours of December 1st.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
