Mineral Wells Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Extreme cold gripped the county for several days. Overnight lows were near or below 15 degrees Fahrenheit almost all week. The period of February 15-16th was the coldest with low temperatures between 0 to -5 degrees Fahrenheit, and the maximum temperature on the 15th was only in the lower teens. Wind chill values during the 14th-16th were between 0 to -20 degrees Fahrenheit most of the time. The cold temperatures resulted in an extreme amount of damage to pipes, infrastructure, and power.
Amateur radio reported power lines down across several parts of Mineral Wells, TX.
Several large trees were blown down in Mineral Wells. Most of the residents in the southeast area of town lost power.
Trained spotters estimated 60 mph winds along Highway 281 in the northeast part of the county. Power flashes were also observed in the area. These winds appear to have occurred as the outflow from the storm began to surge out ahead of the storm.
The Hohertz fire began in southwest Palo Pinto County, approximately 9 miles northwest of Strawn. The local newspaper reported an arching power line started the fire in a pasture. Early on, some deer stands and oil field equipment were burned. On April 15th, this fire merged with the PK West Fire in Stephens County and the fires were renamed the PK Complex. On April 17th, the PK East fire in Palo Pinto County burned into this complex, and on April 19th, the Jackson Ranch Fire in Stephens County also joined this complex. In all, 126,734 acres were burned by this complex of four fires, 167 homes were destroyed, 2 churches were destroyed, and another 124 outbuildings were lost.
