A very strong jet stream moving across the Pacific brought abundant moisture and significant precipitation to northern Arizona on January 21th. The snow level started out around 3400 feet with significant snow above 5000 feet. The jet stream buckled during the day on the 21st and brought much warmer air to the area. This raised the snow level to almost 8000 feet for several hours. A strong cold front then moved across the and brought the snow level crashing to near 4000 feet. The cold front also brought high winds to the area. This storm caused power outages, flooding, evacuations, mudslides, collapsed roofs, and wind damage.||The higher elevations received between 4 and 8 feet of snow from all three storms. Lower elevations along the south slopes of the Mogollon Rim and mountains of Gila and Yavapai County received up to 12 inches of rain from all three storms. Snowfall and rainfall records were shattered. The combination of heavy rain and melting snow caused flooding problems in the lower elevations. Deep snow and mud stranded many people and livestock across the Hopi and Navajo Nations.

December 7, 2009

A powerful winter storm hit northern Arizona December 7th and 8th. This storm produced heavy snow, strong winds, and limited visibility in the high country. In the lower terrain, this storm produced heavy rain, damaging winds, and severe thunderstorms. Freeways were closed due to snow and blowing snow, hunters were trapped by heavy snow and falling trees, and over 400 hundred cars slid off the roads. The storm resulted in the largest search and rescue operations in Coconino County with nearly 50 people located from the Grand Canyon to Happy Jack. The Department of Public Safety dispatch center in Flagstaff received 3,000 calls for service within the first 24 hours of this storm. There were close to 550 slide offs and motorist assists, 83 non-injury collisions, and 26 injury collisions across northern Arizona. More than 14,000 customers were without power after the storm passed. Heavy rains loosened soil around boulders allowing them to fall on roadways. This storm caused school closures across the area.

January 3, 2005

A powerful winter storm moved across northern Arizona from January 3rd to January 5th. Heavy rainfall fell at elevations below 6000 feet along and south of the Mogollon Rim. Some elevations between 5000 to 6000 feet saw heavy rainfall turn to snowfall during the event as snow levels lowered. Some rainfall amounts (in inches) include: Cornville 2.44, Jerome 3.25, Pine (5500') 3.23, McNary 2.59, Cherry 2.69, Crown King 2.99, Humbug Creek 1.71, Iron Springs 1.71, and Payson 3.24. A 12-inch water main in Prescott broke where it crossed the rain swollen Willow Creek. This affected about 1000 customers with low water pressure or no water at all. The break was isolated until the creek went down and repairs could be made. Two fatalities occurred on the Tonto as three young people attempted to cross the creek with a backhoe. The backhoe tipped over and two of the people drowned.Rising water in the Little Colorado River north of Winslow cut off 16 homes in the Birdsprings Chapter. Residents in Pumpkin Center (35 miles southeast of Payson) were cut off by high water in Tonto Creek. The Big Cino Wash stranded 35 to 40 people in Paulden.

Our power has been out since 7pm, we were told it would come back by 1010pm to no avail. I'm rather frustrated as I will be having food that is going bad. Almost all surrounding neighbors have power but us. Would just like our power back asap.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
