Power Outage in Abbeville, LA

A tin roof was blown off a shed and into a power pole. This caused several power outages in the area along Highway 167.

The center of Hurricane Delta moved into eastern Cameron Parish with Vermilion Parish experiencing all on shore flow. This produced the highest storm tides along the coast of Vermilion Parish with a range of 8 to 10 feet MHHW along the gulf. The tide reached 10.1 feet NAV88D southwest of Freshwater Lock. Strom surge and heavy rain caused numerous streets to flood. Power poles and trees were also downed across the parish.

There was a voluntary evacuation for the parish. Many trees and power lines were blown down across the parish. Homes and businesses were damaged by trees falling on them or the winds. Property south of the intracoastal waterway was flooded by the storm surge. Over 60 percent of the parish was without power immediately after the storm. Wind gusts ranged from 50 to 90 mph. Storm surge reached into the 8 to 12 feet range.

Tropical storm conditions began on the 13th and lasted into the 14th across Vermilion Parish. Scattered power outages were reported along with scattered downed trees. The highest wind gust recorded at KIYA was 47 knots with a sustained wind of 35 knots. Freshwater Lock recorded a wind gust of 52 knots with a sustained wind of 40 knots.

Scattered trees and power outages were reported across Vermilion Parish. Maximum power outages were around 2500 customers. One home in Abbeville had a tree fall on it. Due to the extreme low water levels on the west side of Isaac many boats of commercial fisherman and shrimpers got stuck in the mud in the Delcambre canal.

A motorist pulled into a drive way to turn around near the intersection of East and Lafayette Streets to avoid a fallen tree in the street when another tree fell. The second tree fell on the back of the car crushing the trunk and back window. When the trees fell power lines were also pulled down cutting power to around 100 area residents.

Isolated power outages were reported due to a few trees blown down across Vermilion Parish.

An NWS Storm Survey found a large downburst struck southern Vermilion Parish from Forked Island northeastward through the communities of Theall, Esther, and Mouton Cove. The public reported a wind gust of 75 mph in Forked Island, where a pickup truck was pushed a short distance. Minor damage occurred to roofs and siding of mobile homes in Theall. A home weather station in Mouton Cove measured a wind gust of 80 mph, while the public estimated sustained winds as high as 70 mph in Esther. Several trees and power lines were blown down along the path, including in Theall, Mouton Cove, and on Highway 82 west of Highway 333.

Hurricane Gustav caused tropical storm force winds in Vermilion Parish, resulting in scattered trees and power lines downed, mainly in eastern sections of the parish.

A tornado briefly touched down one mile northwest of Mulvey. The roof was blown off of one home and downed trees and power lines.

Pecan Island school estimated winds of 50 knots. Several trees and power lines were blown down. In Maurice, a 14 year old boy was injured when a tree fell on him.
