Power Outage in Ada, OK

Trees and power poles were damaged in extreme northern Pontotoc County.

Three mile wide swath of damage from Vanoss to Union City. Trees and power lines down. A couple of sheds damaged. No injury or home damage reports. Estimated 50 to 60 mph winds at Vanoss. Measured gust to 73 mph east of Ada at highway 1 and county road.

Up to a half of an inch of glaze accumulated on most elevated surfaces. Widespread tree and power line damage was reported across the county. Thousands were without power for at least a couple of days. The greatest glaze accumulations occurred over the northwest half of the county.

The wind gust was measured on West 14th Street in Ada. One business sustained roof damage. Numerous trees and tree limbs were downed, with some of them falling on power lines. A tree limb fell onto a car, causing the car to wreck. The driver was not seriously injured. Power was knocked out in town as a result. Monetary damage estimates were not available.

About two inches of sleet accumulated in and around Ada. Near Stonewall, over a half of an inch of ice coated trees and power lines. From Francis to Roff, 2 inches of sleet accumulated. South of there, at least 3/8 of an inch of ice glaze accumulated on trees, power lines, and elevated surfaces. Some power outages were reported as a result. Widespread travel problems were also reported.

Power poles were downed. Several small sheds were destroyed. Brooke Trailer Park sustained some damage along with several signs across town.

This tornado formed 2.5 miles southwest of Jesse in Pontotoc County and tracked northeastward for 15 miles, crossed through northwest Coal County, then re-entered eastern Pontotoc County before dissipating. A mobile home and barn were destroyed, and power poles were downed 1.5 miles west of Jesse. The mobile home was picked up, thrown northward over a fence and completely broken apart with contents spread over a half-mile area. About 1 mile northwest of Jesse, a barn was destroyed; oil storage tanks were overturned and smashed; an oil pumping unit was overturned and torn apart; power poles were downed, and fences were blown over.

This is the 3rd and final segment to the tornado which formed in Pontotoc County at 0340 CST, moved through Coal County, then re-entered Pontotoc County at 0356 CST. Several additional power transmission towers were downed across this area, along with substantial damage to a power substation about 1 mile southwest of Lula.

A powerful upper level storm system moved through the southern Rockies and into the southern Plains during the late evening hours of the 30th. A pacific cold front, oriented from north to south, pushed to near I-35 after midnight. Strong forcing along this boundary allowed for a band of thunderstorms to develop. The quick movement of the thunderstorms allowed for much of the severe weather to be over eastern Oklahoma. However, one intense supercell moved over Pontotoc county, producing wind damage south of Allen, OK. The thunderstorms intensified as they moved into eastern Oklahoma, with more substantial damage occurring there.
