Law enforcement officials reported trees and power lines blown down by thunderstorm wind gusts estimated at 65 mph (56 knots) along a 5 mile-wide swath from 5 miles south-southwest of Juda to Albany. A mesonet site along the path measured a 60 mph (52 knot) wind gust.

June 8, 2011 - Thunderstorm Wind

Dozens of large trees were uprooted by powerful thunderstorm winds and broken tree branches in a 3-mile wide swath from 3 miles southeast of Dayton to the Albany area. Near the intersection of STH 59 and CTH F, a barn, built in the 1940s, was pushed over by the winds. A hanger at the Albany Airport on STH 59 was damaged by the winds. A few miles north-northwest of Albany the winds damaged some siding and the roof of a barn.

June 8, 2011 - Thunderstorm Wind

This was a heat burst - generated by a decaying convective rain shower band which resulted in evaporation of most of the rain that caused gusty southwest winds and rising temperatures of 10 to 20 degrees F. Large trees were blown down in Albany, and 2 buildings in Monroe were damaged. Additionally, there were scattered reports of broken power poles and power lines. The damage swath was about 5 miles wide.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
