Power Outage in Alexandria, LA

Trees and power lines were downed by a thunderstorm.

Freezing rain pushed into the region before sunrise on the 17th. One quarter to one half an inch of ice accumulated across the parish by the end of the event. Power outages and hazardous road conditions occurred as a result of the storm.

Wind gusts to around 65 mph and heavy rainfall lead to numerous downed trees and power lines across the parish. Flooding was caused by 10 to 20 inches of rainfall. A wind gust of 63 mph was recorded at KAEX. Major flooding occurred along the Calcasieu River along Bayou Cocodrie. One drowning was reported and 50 high water rescues were conducted.

Numerous trees power lines and poles were blown down across the parish. Homes and businesses were damaged from fallen trees, or from the winds. All of the parish was without power immediately after the storm. One indirect death was due to clean up after the storm and two indirect deaths were due to heat related stress. Wind gusts ranged from 65 to 105 mph.

This tornado started near I-49 and Robinson Bridge Road, where it damaged numerous homes and trees along the road. Two mobile homes were completely destroyed, killing one individual. The tornado then moved ENE crossing Hwy 470 damaging additional homes and bringing down numerous power poles. The tornado then jogged NE crossing Hwy 71 where it produced substantial damage to the DeWitt Livestock Facility. The tornado also substantially damaged farm and equipment buildings at the LSUA Dean Lee Research Station. The tornado proceeded ENE to the Red River producing tree and power pole damage.

Tornado started east of Chickamaw Road in an open field then damaged a shed and took shingles off a roof on Hwy 456 before crossing Hwy 71. There it damaged another building before crossing Lamourie Road. It damaged out buildings and snapped power lines. It dissipated north of Lamourie Road in a field. Max estimated winds were 110 mph.

Occasional tropical storm force wind gusts caused isolated power outages and downed a few trees in the parish. The highest wind gust recorded at KAEX was 34 knots.

A strong tornado started near Hwy 165 south of Alexandria. The storm removed the roof of a restaurant on MacArthur Drive, and several other businesses had roof damage as well. Behind the mall, a bowling alley had a wall collapse. Significant roof damage occurred to several businesses in the Lee Street/Overton Street region. The tornado crossed the Red River, and moved from the south side of Highway 167 to the north side of Highway 167 in Pineville. Numerous trees and power lines were downed on the campus of Louisiana College and surrounding areas. Some of these trees did land on homes and vehicles. As the tornado continued north-northeast, it snapped more trees and power lines in the Kingsville region, including Donahue Ferry Road, Pearce Road, Pinecrest, and Camp Beauregard. East of the Ball-Paradise region, many large trees were downed along Washboard Road, damaging some homes and buildings. This tornado continued into Grant Parish. Maximum estimated winds were 135 MPH.

Another rural tornado formed near Glenmora, moving northeast. Numerous trees and power lines were downed along Hwy 113. The peak winds were estimated at 105 MPH.

A spotter reported winds of near 50 MPH in a thunderstorm in North Rapides Parish while the same storm downed a couple of power lines in Alexandria.

Freezing rain began across Central Louisiana during the 11th and lasted into the morning of the 12th. The ASOS at Alexandria International Airport reported an ice accumulation of 0.23; however power was lost to the sensor for a period of time during the event. Reports were also received of around four tenths of an inch in east central sections of the parish with many trees down.

A NWS employee reports a 5th wheel flipped over at 118 Woodcreek loop. Numerous pine trees and power lines are also reported to be down. As the storms moved through many in the area lost power. At 1:40PM Cleco reported near 6,000 customers in the dark.

Scattered trees and power outages were reported across Rapides Parish. Maximum power outages were around 6800 customers. A few homes had trees on them resulting in roof damage. One home and two duplexes in Pineville had ankle deep water in them from flooding. One home on the south side of Alexandria had ankle deep water in it from flooding. The LSU Alexandria campus was closed on Friday august 31st due to six inches of standing water across the entire campus. Many roads were closed and impassable on Friday August 31st in Alexandria and Pineville due to the heavy rain and flooding.

A line of thunderstorms moved through Rapides Parish producing power outages, downing trees, and damaging structures. Around 2,500 customers were out of power across Rapides Parish, but mostly from around Flatwoods to the Ball area.

Scattered power outages were reported due to a few trees blown down across Rapides Parish. Less than ten houses had a tree fall on them.

Rapides Parish Highway Department reported a tree blown down onto power lines on Mill Race Road.

Rapides Parish Emergency Manager and Deville Fire Chief reported a half mile long swath of minor wind damage in the community of buckeye at Highway 1207 and Nation Road. One tree fell onto the back of a school and two homes were damaged from falling trees. A carport was damaged and several power lines were blown down.

A small microburst struck areas 2 miles south of the Alexandria International Airport. A few trees were blown down in a field south of Highway 28. Two houses were damaged on Ross Lane, with one house losing part of its roof and another having its carport collapse on a vehicle. Debris from the first house was thrown across Ross Lane. A highway department warehouse building had one garage door blown inward and destroyed. Power lines were blown down in the area.

Hurricane Gustav caused widespread trees and power lines downed across Rapides Parish. Some of the worst wind damage was in Forest Hill, Glenmora, Cheneyville, and Woodworth. At the Alexandria Mall, part of the roof caved in, damaging many stores in the mall.

Trees and power lines were blown down across Rapides Parish. Some of the trees landed on homes, causing minor damage. One apartment complex had part of its roof blown off in Alexandria. Region-wide wind gusts were estimated as high as 50 mph. The highest wind gust recorded at the ASOS at Esler Field was 48 mph at 1238 pm CST, and 48 mph at 213 pm CST at Alexandria International Airport.

Tropcial storm force winds impacted parts of Rapides Parish during the midday of September 13th. Minor wind damage to trees and power lines was observed.
