Power Outage in Aliquippa, PA

High wind gusts accompanied a strong low pressure system on December 23rd and continue into December 24th. Measured wind gusts across western PA ranged between 40 to 50mph, sustain winds exceed 30mph. Isolated power outages occurred.

The damage started in the vicinity of Tuscarawas road then moved northeast to where five power poles were snapped near the Shop N' Save plaza. This is where the |strongest damage was observed of the entire track, with an estimated peak wind speed of 105-110 MPH. For the remainder of the track, hardwood and softwood trees were used to estimate wind speed. ||The tornado continued northeast and caused uprooted hardwood and|softwood trees through Brady's Run Park. A lull in damage was|observed given limited access around Interstate 376 south of the |Brighton exit. Damage picked up again in Daughtery township where |at least 40 to 50 hardwood trees were snapped or uprooted. One |tree that was uprooted left a six foot crater in the ground. The |last damage was recorded just northeast of Klein Road.

Several microbursts hit Hanover and Greene townships, with severe damage where Rte 30 and 151 intersect. Numerous trees toppled or snapped; power lines down. Trees fell on sheds. Siding and roofing shingles blown off. Roof blown off barn on Rte 151. Several swaths of damage, ranging from 80 to 200 yards wide. Path length likely extended for several miles (exact length could not be determined because damage was sporadic). Maximum wind estimated 65 mph (56 kt)).

A microburst passed across Beaver County, producing wind damage countywide, especially in the towns of Economy, Rochester, Beaver Falls and Ambridge. This microburst downed numerous trees and power lines. Several of these trees were blown down onto houses. One business in Beaver Falls had the brick facade blown from the front of the building.

Strong thunderstorms downed numerous trees and power lines across the county. In Baden, the strong winds lifted shingles from a roof and blew trees down onto a porch and a parked car. In Industry, a 60-foot tree was blown onto the Volunteer Fire Department hall, damaging the roof and gutters. In Beaver, a large oak tree was downed. At the height of the storm, approximately 2,000 customers across the county were without electricity. Most of the power outages were reported in Beaver, Aliquippa and Brighton Township.
