Events
Thunderstorm winds blew down a power line on Walnut Hill Road.
A Cooperative Weather Observer and members of the general public observed ice accumulations ranging from 0.25 to locally 0.75 inches in thickness across Appomattox County, including around the communities of Evergreen, Appomattox and Bent Creek. This icing was intermixed with sleet accumulations in spots of up to 0.3 inches. Over 283 power outages were reported across the county due to downed power lines. Virginia State Police responded to calls for nine disabled vehicles and at least 37 traffic crashes caused by the hazardous road conditions in Appomattox County and the surrounding region. No fatalities were reported. Key impacts: power outages; hazardous to impossible travel conditions; automobile accidents; widespread tree damage.
A possible microburst blew down several trees, power lines, and power poles near the intersection of Fleshman Street and Annie Street. The thunderstorm winds also tore off a wooden roof at a baseball park on Park Lane.
Winds downed at least one dozen trees and two power lines in the county. The damaging wind also blew the roof off an auto body shop along Confederate Boulevard in Appomattox, depositing it on the boulevard. Some the downed trees also blocked roadways, including Windy Knob Lane, Route 460 West, and North Creek Road. Damage values are estimated.
