Power Outage in Arcadia, LA

Trees and power lines downed on Highway 9 just northeast of Bryceland.

An EF-1 tornado with estimated maximum winds near 100 mph touched down in a wooded area west of Layfield Road west of Castor, and tracked northeast across Highway 4, snapping and uprooting numerous trees along its path. One area of maximum winds was found in an open field just west of Layfield Road where 10-11 wooden power poles were snapped just west of Highway 4. The tornado continued northeast across Highway 792 north of Castor, where it tracked along and just north of Ayers Road and across a logging camp, where a second area of maximum winds were found on Kepler Road just north of Ayers Road. The tornado continued to track northeast over a heavily wooded area inaccessible by vehicle, but dopplar radar indicated a tornadic debris signature north of Highway 4 and west of Highway 9. The tornado lifted prior to reaching Highway 9 and the community of Bienville, although straight line winds estimated to be near 90 mph were found here as numerous trees were snapped and uprooted, but all lying in a northeasterly direction.

Power lines were downed on Lowery Road.

An EF-1 tornado with estimated maximum winds near 110 mph touched down just west of the city of Arcadia, near Highway 9 south of Interstate 20. The tornado moved to the east-northeast uprooting and snapping trees and power lines. It completely destroyed a small outbuilding on Sapp Street west of Smith Avenue, and a single family home lost about 20% of its metal roof in this area as well. A mobile home was rolled off of its foundation along Crawford Road south of I-20. As the tornado crossed the interstate, it uprooted several trees before dissipating just north of I-20.

A power pole was snapped on Highway 153 just south of Castor.

An EF-1 tornado with maximum estimated winds near 110 mph touched down on Brooks Loop in the Lucky community where it snapped large branches before crossing Highway 4. The tornado continued northeast across Highway 9 where it broke power poles and snapped/uprooted approximately 20 trees before lifting.

An EF-1 tornado with maximum estimated winds around 105 mph briefly touched down as it crossed Highway 508 and Raspberry Road near the Walsh community. The most significant damage was where it snapped multiple power poles and snapped/uprooted 20-30 trees on Highway 508.

Trees and power lines were downed in Bryceland, and over much of the northern half of Bienville Parish.

Trees down on Highway 4 at Highway 790, as well as Haynes Road at Highway 4 just southwest of Ringgold. Numerous power lines were also downed along Highway 790.

A tree was blown down onto power lines on Glover Road just south of Ringgold.

Several trees were snapped and uprooted along Pumpkin Center Road northeastward to Ridge Road east of Castor. Several powerlines were also downed in the area.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Ike resulted in widespread trees and power lines downed throughout all of Bienville Parish, Louisiana. Power outages were widespread as well with numerous residents without power during the height of the storm and days afterward.

Tropical storm force winds resulted in numerous trees down across the entire parish. Along with all the downed trees, there were reports of numerous power outages throughout the parish as well from downed power lines.

A supercell storm spawned a tornado across northwest Bienville parish. The storm destroyed two mobile homes and did minor damage to 6 other homes along its path. Numerous trees and powerlines were also blown over in the storm. There was one injury from a tree hitting a mobile home approximately one half mile north of Fryeburg.

This storm was a continuation of the tornado that originally touched down in Bienville Parish before moving northeast into southern Webster Parish before once again entering into Bienville Parish before dissipating. The storm continued to knock down trees and powerlines but did no other damage.

Some of the northern Parishes in north Louisiana experienced their second ice storm in as many weeks while others who missed out on the first storm experienced widespread icing problems. Freezing rain accumulations ranged from 1/4 to near 1 inch mainly north of Interstate 20. The Shreveport - Bossier metroplex were not affected by this second storm but widespread power outages were reported across Minden, Homer, Arcadia, Farmerville, Ruston, and Monroe Louisiana. 50,000 residents lost power due to ice accumulations on power lines and fallen trees and snapped trees limbs broken power lines.

An artic airmass spilled southward out of the central plains and into the lower Mississippi Valley. This cold surface airmass was overrun by a warm and humid airmass which combined with a strong upper level storm system across west Texas. The result was widespread freezing rain. Ice accumulations on average of one inch were common north and west of a line from Mansfield and Arcadia to Farmerville LA. An estimated 235,000 residents lost power from snapped power lines. Upwards of 29 transmission lines atop "H" shaped steel towers were snapped due to the weight of the ice. One man was killed and another injured when a tree limb laden with ice fell on them. Numerous traffic accidents were reported from ice covered roads and bridges. In the Shreveport - Bossier metroplex more than 205 streets were either blocked or partially blocked by limbs and fallen trees. Much of northwest Louisiana was declared a disaster area.

A strong upper level trough moved out of the southern Great Basin and into the Lower Mississippi Valley pulling Artic Air southward to the Gulf Coast. Moisture laden air from the Gulf of Mexico moved northward and overran freezing surface temperatures producing an ice storm across the region. Ice accumulations of one to four inches left upwards of 30,000 homes without power due to ice covered tree limbs which snapped and dropped powerlines. Bienville, Clariborne, Lincoln, Ouachita, Union and Webster parishes were declared disaster areas and became eligable for federal aid. Total area damage in these zones ran nearly 7 million dollars. Damage breakdown by individual Parish are not available through this source. Hundreds of chicken houses and carports collapsed from the weight of the ice and snow.

Isolated showers and thunderstorms developed during the afternoon of July 2nd, in response to a very hot and humid air mass, characteristic of temperatures near 100 degrees, and increasing low level moisture from the east from an upper low pressure system that began to drift west along the Alabama and Mississippi coasts. Given the very hot temperatures and moderate instability in place, one of these storms quickly became severe over Northern Bienville Parish, with damaging winds downing numerous trees and power lines over the communities of Gibsland and Bryceland. These storms quickly dissipated by sunset with the loss of heating.
