Power Outage in Arkansas City, KS

Emergency manager reported two trees were uprooted in town and blocking the road. A power pole was blown over, and some power lines were downed.

A high wind gust of 58 mph was measured by the public 7 miles north of Arkansas City. Elsewhere across the county, wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph were common. Power poles were snapped 3 miles south of Udall and a roof was blown was peeled back 6 miles south of Douglass.

Widespread power lines and trees were reported down across the county with Winfield and Arkansas City were the hardest hit. Tree limbs of 6 to 10 inches in diameter were downed and power was out a significant amount of time throughout the event. Up to one half inch ice accumulation was reported.

Power poles were downed on 41st road.

Tornado briefly touched down, knocking down 3 power poles.

Twenty five power poles were snapped.

Westar Energy reported 9 large power poles down between 151st and 131st Roads on 252nd Road just northwest of Arkansas City. Northern parts of Arkansas City were still without power.

Roof damage was reported at the middle school. An office building has a portion of its roof peeled off. Two power poles were broken and number tree limbs up to 4 inches in diameter were broken.

Four power poles were snapped due to the severe winds.

A power line was downed at 3200 North Summit. The report was received from Radio Station KSOK. The time of the report was verified by radar.

Several accidents were reported across the county as well as some power outages. Power outages were reported in Arkansas City between Kansas and Madison Avenues west of B Street that affected around 3,050 customers. Power outages were also reported in Dexter from a downed power line at U.S. Route 160 and 131st Road.

A large tree was uprooted and fell onto a power line just east of E Street. The time of occurrence was estimated from radar.

Winds measured at 60 mph inflicted some minor damage across Arkansas City. A power pole was downed just west of downtown, and a large tree was downed just east of downtown.

Tree limbs and power poles were bent over or downed across southern portions of Winfield. Roof damage occurred to a business in downtown Winfield, resulting in the eventual demolition of the structure by city crews. Additionally, an 18 x 20 foot metal garage was destroyed. A wintry mix of light to moderate sleet and freezing rain affected the county from the mid morning hours on the 27th through the early morning hours on the 28th. The wintry mix eventually changed over to all snow from west to east during the morning hours on the 28th, and persisted into the afternoon hours. Sleet accumulations ranged from 1 to 4 inches, highest over western and northern portions of the county. Additionally, ice accumulated one-quarter to three-quarters of an inch countywide due to freezing rain. Snowfall accumulations on top of the sleet and ice ranged from 1 to 3 inches, heaviest over western and northern portions of the county, where stout north to northeast winds resulted in some blowing snow and reduced visibilities during the morning hours on the 28th. The weight of the ice in concert with the wind downed numerous tree limbs across the county, along with some power lines and power poles. A 1250-foot radio tower collapsed near Winfield due to the weight of the ice. Power outages were numerous countywide.

Numerous trees and several power poles were downed due to the high winds.

A quarter to a half inch of ice accumulated across parts of Cowley County during the ice storm. This resulted in several tree limbs falling onto power lines knocking power out to 1,400 Arkansas City residences and businesses for several hours. Straight line winds produced widespread damage across the Arkansas City area. The strong winds downed numerous trees and power lines/poles, inflicted roof damage to several homes and businesses, and blew over a few semi trailers. Several grave stones at the local cemetary were damaged, and 69 power poles and 24 transformers were damaged or destroyed across the Arkansas City area.|

A short duration Microburst produced the following damage. A roof was blown off of the teen center. Numerous power lines were downed. About 500 customers without power.

Non-thunderstorm winds downed power lines and limbs, uprooted one tree that blocked an adjacent road, and blew over an unspecified number of small storage sheds. A second tree was split about three feet from it's base, causing it to fall onto power lines, two vehicles (both severely damaged), and a storage shed. One of the vehicles, a pick-up truck, was destroyed.

A 30-40 year old cottonwood tree was uprooted and fell onto a small garage. In addition, numerous other trees were uprooted and fell onto power lines severing power to approximately 700 residences.

A line of very strong storms moved across portions of southeast Kansas producing damage to trees and power lines.

Strengthening low pressure across the western high plains resulted in very strong southerly winds across Mid-America on the 30th. Wind gusts estimated around 50 mph downed a power pole in the Winfield area in Cowley county.

A strong upper level disturbance approaching from the northwest spawned a powerful squall line during the very early morning hours of June 1st. The squall line moved east to southeast across portions of south-central and southeast Kansas, producing high winds and flooding rains in its path. Portions of Sumner and Cowley Counties were hit particularly hard with 70 to 80 winds, which inflicted pockets of substantial property damage.
