Baxter Springs Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Up to a half an inch of ice accumulated on elevated objects and tree limbs across the county during the ice storm. One tree fell on a house and another tree fell on to a garage. The northern portion of the county experienced a few power outages. There were a few reports of cars sliding off the road by the local sheriff office.
A large tree fell across Turkey Creek Road northeast of Galena. There were multiple reports of power lines and pole poles blown down across the county causing power outages. A tree was blown down onto a house near Columbus. There were numerous power outages reported across the county.
Strong gusty winds over 50 mph led to a rapidly spreading grass fire near Galena. The fire was started by a fallen power line that had been blown down due to the winds. The fire burned approximately 500 acres and destroyed at least three outdoor structures and one car.
Power poles and lines were reported down due to fallen trees.
Episodes
Severe storms impacted the region during the afternoon and evening of July 19, 2018. The most significant of which included a derecho that began in north central KS during the morning hours that moved southeast toward Kansas City into the early afternoon and then into southwest Missouri through the early evening hours before ending in northern Arkansas. Most notably were several observations of 70+ mph winds, numerous reports of trees and power lines down, and a fatality incident on Table Rock Lake.
High winds of 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 60 mph occurred across southeast Kansas into west central Missouri as a powerful low pressure system tracked from the central plains to the Great Lakes. These high winds downed trees and power lines as well as causing some roof damage across extreme southeast Kansas and west central Missouri.
Estimated winds of 60 to 70 mph caused a widespread area of downed trees and power poles throughout central and southern Cherokee County.
Trees and power lines were blown down around Columbus.
