Power Outage in Benton, AR

A power pole was blown over onto parked cars on Military Road in Benton.

A large tree was blown down on Peeler Bend Rd., blocking the roadway. Several power lines were down also.

These winds were associated with a strong mesoscale low pressure system that resulted from earlier thunderstorm activity. There were no thunderstorms in Saline County when this damage occurred.

Thousands of trees were blown down in Hot Springs Village, with more than 100 houses suffering damage from the falling trees. A cell phone tower was also blown down. Power outages were widespread. Boats and docks were destroyed on Lake Balboa.

A wildfire began about a mile south of Traskwood during the morning hours of the 10th. The fire escaped containment lines during the afternoon and spread considerably, eventually burning 486 acres. At least 21 fire departments fought the fire, along with the Arkansas Forestry Commission. Equipment deployed by the Forestry Commission included eight bulldozers and four air tankers. Two additional bulldozers were provided by a timber company. As the fire grew and threatened structures, Saline County declared a disaster and requested the assistance of the Arkansas National Guard. Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe approved the use of the Guard, and a helicopter was deployed to drop water on the fire. The governor went to the fire. As the fire threatened residences, approximately 575 people were evacuated from the Traskwood, Martin Cutoff, and Holly Creek townships. The Red Cross set up a shelter at the Harmony Grove High School in Haskell. Smoke from the fire spread across Benton, Bryant, and Bauxite in Saline County, and eventually spread into the Little Rock area in Pulaski County. The fire was contained on the evening of the 10th and the evacuees returned to their homes. One old barn was damaged and power was knocked out to some areas. No injuries occurred. Forestry Commission investigators indicated that the blaze was likely started by an arsonist. Ash from the fire fell at the National Weather Service office in North Little Rock, about 35 miles from the fire.

An F2 tornado touched down 4 miles southwest of Sardis and tracked to the east-northeast before moving into Pulaski County. Numerous trees and power lines were downed along the path of the tornado. A number of mobile homes sustained minor or major damage. Eleven people sustained minor injuries, many of which were inside their mobile homes when the tornado struck.

An F1 tornado touched down briefly in Saline County, affecting primarily the city of Haskell. Extensive damage occurred along the path of the tornado as it tracked through town. Four homes were destroyed, five home suffered major damage and 41 sustained minor damage. Most of the minor damage consisted of damaged roofs and blown out windows. Numerous trees and power lines were also downed along the path of the tornado.

A weak tornado was spawned in Saline County about 3.6 miles west-northwest of Benton. The tornado moved east into the Benton area, damaging homes and businesses. There were 66 homes with minor damage, 18 homes with major damage and 10 commercial buildings damaged. There were 9 injuries reported, with the injured treated and released from the hospital. The tornado also downed trees and power lines before dissipating 1.2 miles southwest of Bryant.
