Episodes
A cold front approaching from the north, triggers a cluster of severe thunderstorms across southwest Virginia during the late evening hours. These storms produced damaging winds that blew down a notable amount of trees and power lines.
A hot and humid air mass sparked scattered severe thunderstorms during the afternoon. These storms blew down multiple trees and power lines in southwest Virginia. Two homes suffered damage in the city of Danville due to a tree falling on each of them.
Surface low pressure raced from the High Plains early on December 8th to the upper Great Lakes by early on the 9th while deepening rapidly and bringing a complex series of fronts across the area. Strong west winds of 20 to 40 mph occurred on the afternoon of the 9th with gusts over 60 mph estimated along some ridges and mountain peaks. Marion AWOS in Smyth County measured a 63 mph wind gust from the WSW around 2:00 PM on the 9th with sustained winds over 30 mph for several hours in the afternoon. The result was tree damage and some power line damage across numerous counties in the southwest Virginia.
Thunderstorms fired in advance of an approaching cold front. Some of these reached severe criteria and produced damaging wind gusts between roughly 60 and 80 mph. The most common form of damage was downed trees and powerlines. There was one area that reported structural damage. Near Smith Mountain Lake northeast of Burnt Chimney there was structural damage to decks, roofs, a chimney and two cars. There was also a couple of reports of hail the size of pennies to nickels with the thunderstorms. One storm also helped to produce flash flooding in the town of Cana in Carroll County when high rushing waters blocked the portion of Airport Church Road at U.S. 52 and Wards Gap.
A dissipating complex of thunderstorms across eastern Kentucky and West Virginia sent a gust front east into southwest Virginia. The combination of winds from this gust front and downburst winds from dissipating storms caused numerous trees to fall. The amount of trees which fell was exacerbated due to soil conditions being nearly saturated from recent heavy rains. Powerlines were also downed in Giles and Rockbridge Counties.
