Episodes

September 6, 2022

A large upper trough extended from the Upper Midwest south into East Texas during the afternoon and evening of September 6th. At the surface, a moist and moderately unstable air mass was in place, with temperatures climbing into the lower 90s during the afternoon. With large scale forcing increasing ahead of the upper trough, isolated showers and thunderstorms developed over portions of Northwest Louisiana during the afternoon and evening, with one storm briefly becoming severe over Northern Bossier Parish, where damaging winds downed trees and power lines near Plain Dealing.

May 25, 2021

A shortwave trough progressed east across North Texas during the morning of May 25th, with large scale ascent and a strong southerly low level jet contributing to a complex of showers and thunderstorms that progressed east into portions of Northeast Texas during the afternoon. This complex was able to tap moderate instability that had developed in response to diurnal heating, resulting in isolated severe thunderstorms developing along the lead outflow boundary across East Texas and Northwest Louisiana. As a result, damaging winds downed trees across portions of East Texas, before downing additional trees and power lines south of Benton in Northern Bossier Parish. These storms eventually weakened by late afternoon in response to diminished heating and instability.

December 16, 2019

From the mid-morning through the mid-afternoon hours on December 16th, 2019, a strong cold front progressed from west to east across the Four State region, ahead of a strong upper level trough which progressed east across the Southern Plains. Just ahead of the front, several severe thunderstorms formed in the unstable and highly-sheared air mass in place over Deep East Texas, Central Louisiana, and the Ark-La-Miss. The most potent storm produced a long-track EF-1 tornado that initially touched down in central Bossier Parish and tracked over 26 miles, before lifting in far west-central Claiborne Parish. Along most of its track, the tornado passed over rural areas and most of the damage was limited to trees. However, in east-central Webster Parish, the tornado either severely damaged or destroyed several residences, but fortunately, there were no reported casualties. A few other storms produced relatively minor wind damage in Northern Louisiana, limited to downed trees and power lines. This local event was on the northwestern edge of a large regional tornado outbreak affecting Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

April 29, 2017

A strong, closed upper level low pressure system drifted east across the Texas Panhandle and into Western Oklahoma April 29th and the early morning hours of April 30th. Very strong southerly winds transported rich tropical moisture from the Gulf of Mexico across much of EastCentral Texas, North Louisiana, Southwest Arkansas, and Eastern Oklahoma, with much above normal temperatures returning north across the warm sector as far north as Southern and Eastern Oklahoma. This helped to enhance the instability over these areas, where strong wind shear and deep layer forcing increased well ahead of the upper low over the Interstate 35 corridor of Northcentral Texas. Meanwhile, a shortwave trough ejected northeast across Southeast Texas and Northcentral Louisiana ahead of the closed low during the late morning through the afternoon hours, with scattered strong to severe thunderstorms developing over portions of Deep East Texas which spread northeast and intensified across Northcentral Louisiana. One isolated supercell was responsible for extensive wind damage across these areas, while even spawning an isolated tornado over Central Natchitoches Parish just northwest of Natchitoches. Scattered showers and thunderstorms later developed near and east of the DFW Metroplex during the afternoon of the 29th, which spread east into East Texas by late afternoon and early evening. These storms gradually weakened as they entered the Ark-La-Tex, although sporadic wind and hail damage was observed across portions of extreme Southeast Oklahoma, Southwest Arkansas, and Northwest Louisiana. These storms intensified a bit during the early morning hours of April 30th, with more concentrated reports of trees and power lines being blown down over portions of Northcentral Louisiana, and even an isolated tornado over Eastern Winn Parish. These storms exiting the region prior to daybreak on April 30th.

June 12, 2016

Scattered showers and thunderstorms developed during the afternoon of June 12th, as a warm, very moist, and unstable air mass was in place ahead of an upper level low pressure system over Southern Oklahoma and attendant trough axis that trailed the low across Central Texas. This disturbance enhanced the strength of the sea breeze over Southeast Texas and South Louisiana, with multiple outflow boundaries focusing new shower and thunderstorm development throughout the day as they spread north over much of East Texas and North Louisiana. Meanwhile, the upper level low pressure system to the west focused scattered shower and thunderstorm development over extreme Northeast Texas, Southeast Oklahoma, and Southwest Arkansas during the afternoon and evening. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms developed over McCurtain County Oklahoma, extreme Northeast Texas, and Northwest Louisiana, with damaging winds resulting in downed trees and power lines. Locally heavy rainfall also fell from these storms, with reports of flash flooding through Ouachita Parish in North Central Louisiana as widespread 1.5 to in excess of 3 inches of rain fell within a short period of time. These showers and thunderstorms diminished during the evening, before redeveloping overnight and into June 13th as the upper level lower pressure system and trailing trough entered the region.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
