Bowie Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
There were three calls for trees and power lines down near Landover.
A supercell thunderstorm spawned a brief EF1 tornado just north of Bowie, MD in Prince Georges County late on Tuesday afternoon July 5th, 2022, between 5:31 and 5:34 PM EDT. This supercell spawned along the Howard/Montgomery County line as a result of a remnant mesoscale convective vortex moving through the region which had moved through the Ohio Valley earlier in the day. It evolved into a cluster of cells initially before splitting off into an individual supercell that would develop rotation as it moved out of southeastern Montgomery County into northwestern Prince Georges County. The tornado caused extensive tree damage in the Somerset subdivision just north of Bowie, MD. There was also one instance where a tree had fallen on top of a residence near the intersection of Stafford Lane near Saber Lane. However, there were several other trees down in the area outside of the more concentrated tornadic damage, particularly along Buckingham Drive perpendicular to White Marsh Branch. At this location along Buckingham Drive, trees fell upon power lines, snapping several supporting utility poles. The tornado initially touched down around Tarragon Lane and tracked eastward over the Bowie High School Annex before tracking into the Somerset subdivision, where the majority of the damage was observed. The tornado would then lift just before reaching southern portions of Whitemarsh Park.
Numerous trees and power lines were blown down near Friendly, particularly in the vicinity of Livingston Road. Some power poles were snapped by falling trees and large snapped branches.
Large tree branch down onto power lines near the intersection of Largo Road and Hancock Drive.
Large tree limbs were blown down onto power lines in the 3500 block of Madonna Lane.
Episodes
A cold front stalled over the Mid Atlantic kept moisture and unsettled conditions across the region. Scattered showers and thunderstorms developed across central Maryland, including near the Baltimore and Washington DC suburbs. A storm in Prince Georges County became severe, downing several trees and power lines near Largo.
Scattered thunderstorms with high winds and hail moved through Southern Maryland, the Baltimore metro area, and Northern Central Maryland on the evening of the 27th. In Washington County, large trees and power lines were downed in Hagerstown by winds estimated around 60 MPH. Four homes and 8 cars were damaged by the fallen trees. Two miles northeast of Smithsburg, a wind sensor measured a downburst wind gust of 81 mph before being blown away. The winds destroyed the remainder of the weather station by ripping it and the piece of roof it was attached to off a house. The winds also destroyed an 800 pound wooden play set nearby. The roof of a barn and 30 feet of fencing was blown away and a 1200 pound boat was moved. Dime sized hail was also reported. In Prince George's County, high winds downed trees in Greenbelt, Seat Pleasant, and Landover. In Calvert County, winds knocked down trees in Sunderland. In St. Mary's County, trees were downed in Golden Beach. In Howard County, a 57 MPH wind gust was recorded in Fulton.
A thunderstorm with large hail and high winds moved through Prince George's County during the afternoon of the 19th. In Greenbelt, dime to nickel sized hail and 60 MPH winds were reported. Dime to quarter sized hail fell in Lanham. Pea sized hail was noted in Glen Burnie, Glenn Dale, and Parkville. About 2200 customers lost power as a direct result of the storm.
