Power Outage in Braselton, GA

Winds gusted between 35 and 50 mph for several hours. A gust of 48 mph was recorded at the Jefferson AWOS (KJCA) at 5:55 AM EST. The Jackson County Emergency Manager reported several trees and power lines blown down around the county.

The Jackson County Emergency Manager reported trees and power lines blown down from Thistlewood Drive in Talmo to Hog Mountain Road east of Pendergrass.

Local news media reported numerous trees and power lines blown down across the county. Much of the county was without electricity for varying periods of time. A wind gust of 41 mph was measured near Pendergrass. Radar estimated between 2 and 3 inches of rain fell across the county with 2.97 inches measured in Jefferson. No injuries were reported.

A tree fell onto a building and the roof was blow off of the building along Highway 332 east of Braselton. On Cambridge Farm Road in Hoschton, a tree fell onto a house killing a 29 year old man inside.

The Jackson County Emergency Manager reported around a quarter of an inch of ice accumulation on trees, power lines and other elevated surfaces across the county due to freezing rain and drizzle. Numerous trees and power lines were downed.

The Jackson County Emergency Manager estimated 75-80 trees were blown down, mainly in the Jefferson and Arcade area. Ten houses were damaged, most due to falling trees, but a couple had windows blown out due to the strong winds. Multiple power lines were down as well. Most of the damage was along Jett Roberts Road into downtown Jefferson and along Johnson Mill Road in Arcade.

Freezing rain began just after sunrise on the morning of the 25th, accumulating on elevated surfaces, bridges, and overpasses through the morning and afternoon hours. Widespread amounts of 0.10 to 0.25 inches of freezing rain were reported. The slick roads resulted in numerous automobile accidents and power outages across the area.

The Jackson County 911 Center reported that two trees were down on two different power lines in the northeast part of the county near Apple Valley and Commerce.

The Jackson County 911 Center reported extensive wind damage in the southeast part of the county, just southwest of Center. The roof of a commercial building collapsed and damage was also reported to a gymnasium next door. At least 10 trees and several power lines were down in the vicinity as well.

The Jackson Herald reported that numerous large old oak trees were down at the Shields-Ethridge Heritage Farm near Arcade. Some of these trees fell on the farm's historic outbuildings. The Athens Banner/Herald reported that 16 roads were blocked during the night from downed trees.

The maximum snowfall reported was 4.0 inches. Many trees and power lines were brought down across the county from the weight of the heavy, wet snow. Thousands of residents in the county were left without power, in some cases for two to three days.||The heavy wet snow caused damage to netting and cabling systems at two recreational parks, the Lamar Murphy Park in Jefferson and the West Jackson Place Park in Hoschton.

The Jackson County Fire and Rescue Department reported that a power pole was blown over onto a mobile home in Jefferson. The home was set on fire by the downed power line.

The Jackson County Emergency Management Director reported that a tornado had touched down just southeast of Braselton and traveled approximately one mile to the north. The tornado crossed Georgia Highway 124, and then ended just before Interstate-85. Several dozen large trees were blown down in the area, some on roads and power lines. In addition, minor damage was reported to roofs on a few homes. Damage was confined largely to debris clean up.

The Jackson Electric Membership Cooperative reported many trees and power lines down throughout the county. Power outages in the county were widespread.

A storm spotter and the Jackson County 911 Center both reported that a number of trees had been blown down around the county, especially from Jefferson to Nicholson. Some power lines were also down in the Nicholson area as well.

A very strong wedge of cold air, associated with a Canadian high pressure system over the mid-Atlantic, nosed down the east side of the Appalachians into north and east Georgia. Warm air just above the layer of cold air resulted in light freezing rain and freezing drizzle in several northeast Georgia counties. The area most affected was between Danielsville, Washington, Lexington, and Jefferson. Just a light glazing of ice was reported in these counties, primarily on trees, power lines, and bridges. No significant problems were noted.
