Power Outage in Browns Mills, NJ

An EF-0 tornado began in Southampton Township near Burrs Mill Road south of Ongs Hat Road where some minor tree damage occurred to a few properties. The tornado continued east through a sparsely populated area. It crossed Ongs Hat Road and Stockton Bridge Road where some additional minor tree damage occurred. A tree was found uprooted, having fallen toward the west on Stockton Bridge Road. This was the area where the tornado reached its maximum width of about 200 yards. A tree was uprooted at a residence on Ongs Hat Road, then the tornado moved into a wooded wetland where more minor tree damage and downed limbs were found in a nature preserve along Jade Run. The tornado continued east crossing Magnolia Road where several large tree limbs were down and a softwood tree uprooted. The tornado crossed the road and continued eastward, largely paralleling Sheep Pen Hill Road. The tornado uprooted a few trees and downed several large tree limbs along the edge of the wooded area to the north of the road and a large blueberry field to the south. A tree fell onto a power line near the bend in the road, then the tornado dissipated as it moved through another blueberry field and into a wooded area.

NWS Storm Survey found significant straight line wind damage along Ward Avenue between Bordentown and Crosswicks near the Garden State Youth Corrections Facility. Numerous trees and power poles were snapped in this area.

About 25 homes were damaged by downed trees. Downed trees blocked 22 roadways. The hardest hit areas within the borough included Tabernacle Road, Chippewa Trail and Stokes Road near Upper Aetna Lake. Half the borough lost power. A motorist was not injured when the tree fell on their vehicle on Lenape Trail. The Canoe Carnival was postponed until Saturday August 8th because of the wind damage within the borough. One float was damaged by the winds. ||In Medford Township, a home on McKendimen Road suffered the worst reported wind damage. A downed tree created a four foot wide hole in the home. The family was displaced. A downed tree punctured a hole in a home on Sunset Trail. The Tamarac section of the township was hardest hit. Six roadways were closed by downed trees. Power was restored the night of the 1st.

A severe thunderstorm knocked down over 120 trees in Medford and Evesham Townships. The Hoot Owl section of Medford Township was hit particularly hard. Ten homes suffered moderate damage. About another 50 more suffered minor damage in both the Hoot Owl and Wood Ridge sections. Trees as large as two feet in diameter and 80 feet in height were knocked down. It was estimated that it would take two to three weeks to haul away all of the debris. In Evesham Township, there were 20 calls for downed trees. Three trees caused home damage. Power lines were also knocked down along New Jersey State Route 73. About 1,000 homes and businesses lost power in the two townships. It was restored to all places by the morning of the 30th.

A potent thunderstorm moved across portions of Burlington County, NJ during the late afternoon hours of July 22nd. As a result of the strong winds generated from the thunderstorm, large tree limbs and wires were knocked down at 4:20 PM EDT in Maple Shade along with reported power outages.

A severe thunderstorm rolled across northwestern Burlington County, New Jersey during the very early morning hours of June 29th. Trees and power lines were downed at 4:03 AM EDT in Cinnaminson, Riverside and Palmyra as a result of strong winds.

Thunderstorms during the evening of June 1st caused havoc across Burlington County, New Jersey and nearby counties. Lightning sparked a house fire in Medford, which destroyed the home. No one at the home was hurt, however a Medford firefighter was taken to a nearby hospital as he suffered from dehydration. Also, a shed fire occurred in Mount Laurel on Hainesport-Mount Laurel Road, and a house fire occurred on Avon Court. Both fires were caused by lightning strikes, and both structures sustained severe damage. Meanwhile, two house fires occurred on King Avenue in Evesham when lightning struck a utility pole at 11:37 PM EDT, dropping a power line in front of both homes. This energized the water lines into each home and sparked small fires. There were no injuries reported and the dollar amount in damage was not available. Lightning strikes also damaged computer systems at the Burlington County Central Communications building and also at the National Weather Service Office in Mount Holly, NJ. Numerous wires were downed throughout Medford, Evesham and Mount Laurel from the intense cloud to ground lightning strikes. Some 60,000 customers were without power in Burlington, Camden and Gloucester Counties.

The gust front from a severe thunderstorm downed trees, tree limbs and and wires in northwestern Burlington County including the townships of Willingboro, Maple Shade and Mount Laurel. At the Riverton Yacht Club, the gust front capsized eleven boats and sixteen people tumbled into the Delaware River. They were rescued without being injured. Public Service Electric and Gas reported about 16,000 of its customers statewide lost power including Burlington County. It took most of the night to restore power to all homes and businesses with homes in Willingboro the last to have their power restored.

A severe thunderstorm knocked down several trees and power lines in Cinnaminson, Evesham, Maple Shade, Medford, Moorestown and Mount Laurel Townships. Some of the worst tree damage occurred on Westerly Drive in Evesham Township. A SKYWARN Spotter measured a wind gust to 64 mph in Medford Township. Burlington County Emergency Services responded to about 50 calls of wind damage throughout the county.

An F1 (Fujita Scale) tornado touched down in Woodland Township, injured two people, damaged the New Lisbon Development Center and about 350 acres of trees in the Brendan T. Byrne State Forest. The Development Center is a state run home for about 500 developmentally disabled adults. The tornado touched down in a wooded area about one mile south of the intersections of State Routes 70 and 72. A second much smaller and weaker funnel also briefly touched down in that area. The tornado proceeded east through the New Lisbon Development Center where all the property damage and injuries occurred and crossed State Route 72 into the Brendan Byrne State Forest. Two staff members (male and female) were injured. The male was injured when the van he was in was overturned by the tornado. The female was injured when flying glass and debris shattered the windows of the separate vehicle she was in on State Route 72. A thrift store on campus was destroyed and several apartments in the same attached building was also destroyed. None of the residents were injured. The roof and walls from the thrift shop were tossed more than one hundred yards. A metal bench was found in a tree. The tornado also badly damaged the administration center building. A tractor-trailer used for storage near the thrift shop was found in the woods. Several vehicles were overturned. The tornado uprooted and snapped trees, bent bird cage poles and ripped light poles from the ground. One-hundred-year-old trees were snapped. The tornado then proceeded into the Brendan Byrne State Forest where approximately 350 acres of trees were damaged or destroyed. Several hiking trails were closed through the 31st until the debris was cleared. The tornado lifted in the forest, but debris from it fell in Manchester Township in adjacent Ocean County. New Jersey State Route 72 was closed through the night and about 100 people lost power. The tornado was rate an F1 with maximum winds estimated at the high end of the scale, approximately 110 miles an hour. The tornado remained on the ground for about 2.6 miles and its path width was around 100 yards.

A line of severe thunderstorms knocked down several large tree limbs and wires from Moorestown Township northeast through Springfield Township. Public Service Electric and Gas reported about 13,000 of its customers lost power that evening in their service area from Gloucester County northeast through Burlington County. The worst reported outages in Burlington County were in Moorestown Township.

A powerful line of severe thunderstorms uprooted numerous trees and power lines throughout Burlington County. The combination of the Florence Tornado and the line of severe storms produced an estimated property damage of $2.1 million dollars throughout the county. Most of the wind damage was caused by trees falling on homes and vehicles. Beside Florence, other hard hit areas included Beverly, Bordentown, Burlington City, Burlington Township, Cinnaminson, Delanco, Delran, Edgewater Park, Palmyra, Riverside and Willingboro Townships. States of emergency were declared in Delanco, Riverside and Edgewater Park. The county 911 center received 770 weather related calls which included 130 reports of downed lines. In Cinnaminson, at the Mar-Khem Industrial site, the winds ripped the front half of a metal roof from a warehouse and office building. Several support beams were twisted and a trailer was blown over. In Beverly, part of a roof was torn from a trucking warehouse. In Edgewater Park, Colonial and Regency Roads were hit hard. Trees were removed from bedrooms and living rooms. Schools were closed. in Delanco, the steeple on the Abundant Life Fellowship Church was toppled. In Riverside, downed wires caused a fire that damaged the annex of the First Baptist Church. In Delran, two tractor-trailer boxes overturned on U.S. Route 130 and snarled it for hours. The leg of a plastic picnic table pierced the windshield of a vehicle. In Burlington City, wind damage was concentrated on Riverbank Avenue, Wood Street, West Pearl Street and West Union Street. About 23,000 homes and business lost power in Mercer, Burlington, Camden and Gloucester Counties. All power was restored by the afternoon of the 24th.

A severe thunderstorm caused wind damage across nine municipalities, mainly in the northwest part of Burlington County. The county office of emergency management received about 90 wind damage related calls. About 40 power lines were downed in the county. Wind damage was reported in Bordentown Township, Burlington City, Burlington Township, Chesterfield Township, Mansfield Township, New Hanover Township, North Hanover Township, Springfield Township and Willingboro Township. Road closures occurred in Chesterfield, North Hanover and Springfield Townships. Three roads were closed through the night in Chesterfield and Springfield Townships. In Burlington City, a large tree limb pierced the ceiling of a home and did not stop until it reached the living room's couch. In North Hanover Township, a porch was damaged by fallen trees. In Springfield Townships, along County Route 537, about fifty trees, up to three feet in diameter were knocked down.

The gust front from a line of severe thunderstorms that moved through central New Jersey, knocked down large tree limbs and power lines, mainly in townships that border or are near Ocean and Mercer Counties.

Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning struck two homes and a barn in Burlington County. The ensuing fires badly damaged all three structures. The homes were uninhabitable. In Eastampton Township, the fire severely damaged the second floor and attic of a Newberry Street home. In Moorestown Township, lightning initially struck the garage. The fire spread from the garage to the house. It took firefighters 90 minutes to bring the fire under control. In Lumberton Township, it took firefighters 45 minutes to bring the barn fire under control. Three cats were rescued. No serious injuries were reported from any of the fires. Public Service Electric and Gas reported about 90,000 of its customers lost power in west central New Jersey because of the intense lightning and wind. About 7,500 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes occurred in the Greater Philadelphia Metropolitan Area between 7 p.m. EDT and 1 a.m. EDT that evening. All power was restored to Burlington County residents by 10 a.m. EDT on the 4th.

A severe thunderstorm knocked down numerous large tree limbs and wires in Moorestown and Mount Laurel Townships. A large tree was also knocked down on Chester Avenue in Moorestown. Just south of Mount Laurel, South Jersey Regional Airport reported a peak wind gust of 49 mph at 533 p.m. EDT. A rotten tree was knocked down near the airport on Ark Road. Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE & G) reported about 25,000 of its customers lost power from the series of thunderstorms on the 19th in Mercer, Burlington and Camden Counties. All power was restored in Burlington County on the 21st.

Wind damage was also reported in Maple Shade, Mount Laurel, Medford Lakes, Florence and Mansfield Townships. About 1,500 PSE&G customers lost power, most were in Florence and Mansfield.

A severe thunderstorm pulled down some wires in Bordentown and knocked over a large tree in Fieldsboro. About 4,000 homes and businesses lost power in Mercer and Burlington County that afternoon.

Thunderstorms embedded within bands of heavy precipitation exacerbated the wind and in some instances became severe. This was the case across the northwestern half of Burlington County. Severe thunderstorms knocked down trees and wires from Evesham Township east through Pemberton Township. In Mount Laurel Township, several poles were knocked down on Elbo Lane. In Hainesport Township, Marne Highway (County Route 537) was closed because of a downed tree. A SKYWARN Spotter measured a wind gust of 65 mph during the thunderstorm in Pemberton. PSE&G reported about 9,000 customers lost power throughout Central New Jersey; 3,400 occurred within Burlington County.

An unseasonably warm air mass and an intense low pressure system and cold front set the stage for an extremely windy day across New Jersey on December 17th. Thunderstorms embedded within bands of heavy precipitation exacerbated the wind and in some instances became severe. For the second time this day, it occurred in Burlington County. The severe thunderstorm mainly affected the southeast part of the county and pulled down additional trees, tree limbs and power lines.
