The thunderstorm winds downed trees and power lines throughout the region. Wind gusts were measured to 63 mph at Rochester Airport and 66 mph at Oswego County Airport. Several homes and cars were damaged by falling trees including ones in Depew, Sinclairville, Avon, Fairport, Victor, Dansville, and Canandaigua. In Arcade, Wyoming County, a commercial sign was blown down. Several roads were closed by fallen trees and debris.
Thunderstorms ahead of an approaching strong cold front produced damaging winds during the late evening and early overnight hours. The thunderstorm winds downed trees and power lines throughout parts of the western southern tier and Finger Lakes region. Wind gusts were measured to 61 mph. Several homes and cars were damaged by falling trees including ones in Silver Creek, Celeron and Jamestown. Approximately 70 trees at a golf course near Attica toppled. In Westfield, a garage was lifted off its foundation. Several roads were closed by fallen trees and debris including ones in Perrysburg, East Aurora, Falconer and Onoville.
Showers and thunderstorms developed along and ahead of an advancing cold front. The thunderstorms produced damaging winds that downed trees and power lines. In Buffalo, the winds partially tore the roof off a building at Utica Street and Massachusetts Avenue. In Weedsport, a trampoline was lifted and landed on a house. The thunderstorms also produced hail up to one inch in diameter near Adams.

The thunderstorms downed trees and wires throughout the region. In Palmyra, a large barn was blown down by the winds. Near Sardinia, the thunderstorm winds downed power poles and lines. Power outages were scattered throughout the region.
Several rounds of strong to severe storms developed during the morning and early afternoon hours ahead of an approaching cold front.. Storms first developed along a line from the east end of Lake Erie to the west end of Lake Ontario shifting south and east through the morning then pushing east of the region during the early afternoon. The thunderstorm winds downed trees and power lines throughout the region. Several thousand power outages were reported. Lightning associated with the thunderstorms struck a warehouse in Lancaster causing several thousand dollars in damage. Another lightning strike hit the chimney of the Carmelite Monastery in Buffalo. The chimney which was 94 years old collapsed due to the strike. Damage was estimated at $30,000. In Allegany county, the heavy rains from the thunderstorms caused localized flash flooding with a couple of roads washed out in Wellsville and Andover.
Thunderstorms developed ahead of an approaching cold front. The first round of storms developed across southern Ontario just west of the St. Lawrence River and moved east across Jefferson and northern Lewis counties producing fairly widespread wind damage. A second line formed near the Buffalo area. This line produced a few sporadic wind damage reports near Buffalo. As this line progressed southeast of Buffalo, the storms intensified producing a corridor of widespread damage. Outside of these two lines, a few more isolated severe storms developed and produced wind damage. Damage consisted mostly of downed trees and power lines. In some cases roads were blocked and closed by downed trees. In Delevan, a large tree damaged two trailers. In Shaw Bay, Oswego County, a dock was flipped over by the thunderstorm winds. Several of the storms produced half inch to three quarter inch hail near Clarence, Orchard Park, Brighton, Oswego, and Chaffee. An isolated storm near Silver Springs, Wyoming county, producing one inch hail.
Thunderstorms accompanied the passage of a cold front across the region. Thunderstorm winds produced wind gusts which downed trees and power lines. Damage was reported in Spencerport, Elma, Friendship, Wellsville, and Weedsport. In Sunset Bay, the thunderstorm wind downed a 50-foot tree which crushed a cottage and flattened two cars. Six people in the cottage at the time escaped unharmed. Winds were estimated near 60 mph.
An area of showers and thunderstorms moved across the lower Great Lakes region during the overnight and very early morning hours. The first round of showers moved across southern Ontario and cross the Buffalo area before moving across the Genesee Valley and western Finger Lakes. The second round moved across Lake Erie into the western southern tier. The thunderstorms produced strong winds that downed trees and power lines. Several of the downed trees damage structures and cars. Some roads were temporarily blocked by debris.

A strong cold front sweeping across the lower Great Lakes was preceded and accompanied by severe thunderstorms. The thunderstorm winds produced widespread damage throughout the region. Trees and power lines were downed. The highest recorded gust was 66 mph at Fort Drum. Some specific reports of damage included: trees down on Route 5 in Portland, Rockspring Road in Ashord, Old Chautauqua Road in Gerry, Allen Street in South Dayton, Boston-Colden Road in Colden, Route 20 in Pavilion, and Locust Street in Honeoye. Some of the trees were measured to 30 inches in diameter. The falling trees and limbs damaged several homes and automobiles in Marion, Scriba, West Rush and Martinsburg. In Farmington, a stretch of ten power poles was blown over by the strong winds.
Thunderstorms accompanied the passage of a cold front across the Niagara Frontier. Isolated thunderstorms became severe with winds downing trees and power lines in Lewiston and Cowlesville.
High winds pushed ice in Lake Erie over the Niagara River ice boom. The strong winds and increased ice flows resulted in an ice jam along the Niagara River between the New York Power Authority Intakes and Cayuga Island. This jam resulted in flooding along the low-lying areas of the Robert Moses Parkway and the LaSalle Expressway, both of which were closed. Flooding was also reported on Cayuga Island and Grand Island. On Cayuga Island, Griffon Avenue, South 89th Street and South 91st Street were flooded. On Grand Island, property on East River, Long and Baseline Roads was flooded. Ice breakers from the U.S. and Canada were used to break up the jam.

A hot and very humid airmass was in place across western and north central New York with the region in a prolonged heat wave. Thunderstorms developed during the afternoon and evening hours as a pre-frontal trough approached from the upper Great Lakes. The storms moved east across the region with winds along the gust front were measured to 60 mph and several estimated even high gusts where instrumentation was not available. The strong winds downed trees and powers lines. Power outages, while scattered in nature were reported from a large portion of the area. Roads were blocked by fallen trees and debris. Several reports of minor structural damage were also received.
Two distinct lines of thunderstorms developed ahead of a weak boundary during the late afternoon and became more organized toward evening. One line developed across the Genesee Valley and the other across the eastern Lake Ontario Region. Thunderstorm winds downed trees in Ridgeway, Murray, Ogden Center, Ellery Center, Belleville, Croghan, Lowville and near the Chautauqua Institution. In some areas, scattered power outages were reported as the falling limbs and trees brought down power lines. In Rochester, lighting struck a house igniting a fire and damaging the chimney.
A line of thunderstorms developed along a pre-frontal trough and moved across the entire region from west to east from mid-morning through early afternoon. The thunderstorm winds downed trees and power lines as the fast moving line swept across the area. Power poles were snapped in some cases and power outages were reported throughout the area. Utilities reported tens of thousands of customers without power. In the City of Buffalo, a funnel cloud was sighted although a damage survey proved that damage to several buildings on the west side of the city was caused by straight-line winds. In some locations roads were blocked by downed trees. In Cheektowaga Town Park, twenty to thirty large trees were blown down. In Marilla, in addition to tree damage, a trailer was blown onto its side and into some trees.

Power outages were scattered throughout the region with utilities reporting several thousand without power at its worse. In Alden, the winds tore the roof off a garage and threw it about one hundred feet downwind. In Caledonia, a metal shed was blown over.
An upper level disturbance crossing the lower Great Lakes fueled thunderstorms across the region. In Wyoming county, thunderstorms produced hail one-inch in diameter. In Ontario county, thunderstorm winds downed trees and branches. In Lewis county, the thunderstorms winds downed trees and power lines. Moose River Road near Porters Corners was blocked by fallen trees. The heavy rains that accompanied the thunderstorms produced flash flooding in parts of southern Erie County, In North Collins, multiple roads were flooded and closed and travel was difficult.
A warm and muggy late summer air mass across the region fueled showers and thunderstorms across the Niagara Frontier. The thunderstorms produced winds gusting to 60 mph which downed trees and power lines. In North Tonawanda, the strong winds blew windows out of an apartment building. Several roads were blocked by fallen trees. At Golden Hill State Park, the winds tore the awning off a recreational vehicle and collapsed several tents.

In North Tonawanda, Niagara County, a home was damaged by a falling tree. Three homes across the area were damaged by lightning-sparked fires. The homes were located in East Pembroke, Wilson and Canandaigua.
Weak low pressure over Georgian Bay moved northeast across the lower Great Lakes and pulled a frontal boundary across the region. Thunderstorms that accompanied the front reached severe limits producing strong winds gusting to 65 mph and large hail. Trees and powers lines were reported down in Orchard Park and near Chaffee in Erie county, near Salamanca in Cattaraugus county, and in Bolivar and Alma in Allegany county. One inch hail was reported in East Aurora where hail accumulated and covered the ground in some sections. Lightning struck an automobile on Davidson Avenue, Buffalo. The lightning shattered a window. A woman in the vehicle suffered minor injuries from the glass. In Orchard Park, lightning ignited a fire on Stoughton Lane. Damage to the house was extensive, estimated between two and three hundred thousand dollars.
A warm front lifting north from the Ohio valley produced an isolated severe thunderstorm that moved over southern Erie County. The thunderstorms winds of up to 60 mph blew down trees and knocked out power to a barn in Lawtons, just west of Springville. One of the pole barns on the property was shifted two feet off its foundation.

In Silver Creek, Chautauqua County, lightning struck a transformer at the Silver Creek High School knocking out the power. The school was evacuated and students sent home.

Several homes and automobiles were damaged by felled trees. The heavy rains that accompanied the thunderstorms produced some flash flooding in Chautauqua County. Small creeks overflowed and parking lots were flooded in Jamestown. In Lakewood, numerous roads and viaducts were flooded and closed.

This followed an earlier round of strong thunderstorms and heavy rains earlier in the day. Damage from the thunderstorm winds was widespread across the Niagara Frontier and Western Southern Tier. Trees as large as two to three feet in diameter were downed. Power outages were scattered throughout the region as the winds downed power lines.|The unprecedented heavy rains that fell���four to six inches in less than two hours���resulted in some of the worst flash flooding the area has seen. Parts of Erie, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties received State and Federal Disaster Declarations. In the Village of Silver Creek an entire mobile home park along Silver Creek was washed away. The flood waters continued through the heart of the village through the fire station, police headquarters and highway department. Several police cars, an ambulance and much of the town���s highway equipment were lost. In Irving, the flood waters flowed across parts of the New York State Thruway and Routes 5 and 20. Water flooded portions of Lakeshore Hospital there. Also in Irving, the Seneca Nation sustained almost two million dollars in damage to roads and bridges. In total, in Chautauqua county hundreds of homes were damaged and 45 homes were condemned, including the 35 mobile homes of the aforementioned park. In the Village of Gowanda (part of which is in Erie County and part in Cattaraugus county), extensive flash flooding occurred. Tri-County hospital in Gowanda was inundated by flood waters. Patients were transferred to Lakeshore Hospital in Irving. Several hundred homes sustained damage and 40 homes were condemned there. One fatality occurred in Gowanda as an 80-year-old man ventured out to check a bridge on his property and was swept away by the flood waters. The gage on Cattaraugus Creek at Gowanda showed a rise from six feet to near 13 feet in less than an hour (flood stage is 10 feet). Throughout Cattaraugus county over one-quarter of the roads were damaged or lost.
Moist, unstable air ahead of an approaching cold front set off scattered strong to severe thunderstorms during the late afternoon and evening. The Lake Erie breeze served as focal point for initial severe convection that produced quarter sized hail over Wyoming County. Over the eastern Lake Ontario region, the thunderstorms downed trees and power lines in Jefferson County. In Philadelphia, a 14��� x 80��� trailer was flipped by the downburst winds. As the thunderstorms moved across southern Erie County, the heavy rain (over four inches in some locations) produced flash flooding that damaged road shoulders���including Route 62, Schintzius and Jennings Roads and Larkin Street.

The thunderstorms also produced heavy downpours that resulted in flash flooding over parts of the higher terrain in southern Erie and Cattaraugus counties. In the town of Collins, Route 39 was closed. Numerous roads were flooded and some damaged in Perrysburg, Cattaraugus county.

The thunderstorms that develop produced damaging winds estimated to 60 mph and hail measured up to one inch in diameter. Scattered power outages were reported. The storms also dropped several inches of rain in a short span of time over parts of Rochester resulting in flash flooding. Nearly one foot of water across the road resulted in the closing of portions of Interstates 490 and 390 for several hours right at the start of the evening rush hour.

Convection focused on outflow and lake breeze boundaries. The thunderstorm wind gusts were measured to 62 mph and downed trees and power lines. Hail up to nickel-sized was also reported.
Thunderstorms developed in a southerly flow of warm humid air ahead of an approaching cold front. The late afternoon thunderstorms produced gusty winds estimated around 60 mph across parts of the Niagara Frontier and Western Southern Tier. Trees and power lines were downed by the winds. Power outages were reported in Lewiston, Colden, Ransomville and Elma. A significant amount of damage occurred at Fredonia Central Schools in Fredonia. Power poles were snapped. At the ball fields the concrete walls of two dugouts were blown over. The wall and garage door of a concrete block storage building were blown in. Additional damage occurred nearby as several large trees were uprooted and the wind peeled back a section of the metal roof of a building.

Trees and power lines were downed by the winds throughout the region. At the Buffalo Airport, a Boeing 737 on the ground was blown into a jet way and damaged. Several homes and automobiles sustained damage by falling trees and limbs. In Watertown, a roof was blown off a building.

Fallen trees damaged homes and automobiles in Lockport, Brighton, and Rochester. Power utilities reported upwards of 20,000 custormers without power. Lightning ignited a house fire in Orchard Park with damage estimated near $20,000. In the Town of Aurora, a barn filled with hay burned to the ground after being struck by lightning. In Brighton, a motorist was injured when a tree fell on her car near Ellison Park. In Rochester, a man was killed while riding an ATV through a wooded area behind a cemetery when strong winds brought down a tree on top of him.
As high pressure remained anchored off the mid-Atlantic Coast, a warm, humid southerly flow prevailed across the region. An approaching cold front triggered afternoon and evening thunderstorms. The thunderstorm winds downed trees and power lines throughout numerous towns throughout the area. Across the western sections, these included Concord, Hamburg, Gerry, Westfield, Niagara Falls, LeRoy, Varysburg, Bennington, Otto, Orchard Park, Henrietta, Carlton, York, Bemus Point, Byron, Castile, Mount Morris, and Canaseraga. Further east, damage was reported in Manchester, Newark, Cato, Wolcott, Oswego, Carthage and Denmark. Utility companies reported numerous power outages throughout the area with upwards of 20,000 customers without power. In Rige, a house fire was blamed on a lightning strike from the storms.
Warm and humid conditions persisted across the region with lake breezy boundaries and upper level disturbances being the focus for thunderstorms to develop during the afternoon and evening hours. The thunderstorms brought torrential rains and gusty winds that uprooted trees and tore down utility poles and wires. Nearly 10,000 customers were left without power. Several structures sustained damage from the strong winds. The heavy rains that accompanied the storms resulted in poor drainage flooding on roads and in basements.

In Silver Creeks, a vacant house was struck by lightning and set on fire. In Oswego, a lightning strike to a home knocked off shingles and started a small fire in the roof. The lightning traveled through the electrical system, damaging appliances, and through the home's copper water pipes.

In Niagara County, vegetables and fruit was damaged by the strong winds and hail.
Severe thunderstorms developed ahead of an approaching cold front. The thunderstorms produced measured winds gusting to near 60 mph which downed trees and power lines. Trees reportedly fell on houses in Avon, Gowanda and Naples. Fallen trees also damaged automobiles in Arcade, Lily Dale, Salamanca and Honeoye Falls. At Alfred State College in Allegany county, an estimated $100,000 damage occurred as the storms destroyed a dugout and storage shed, damaged athletic fields and other college properties. On Chautauqua Lake, a marina suffered substantial damage to its seawall and dockside refueling area. Also on the lake, several boats broke loose from their moorings. Utility companies reported that at the peak of the storm nearly 30,000 customers were without power. A 14-year old girl was critically injured at the Chautauqua Institution when a 4-foot diameter trees was felled by the thunderstorm winds and crushed her. A 50-year old man was injured by lightning in Webster. Lightning struck a tree and traveled through the electrical wiring in his home. Lightning also damaged the chimney of the Stanley Fire Department in Ontario county. Structure fires, reportedly started by lightning, occurred in Medina, Clarendon, Ridgeway and Shelby.
Thunderstorms developed in a unseasonably hot and humid airmass during the late afternoon and early evening hours. The storms downed trees and power lines in Rochester, Lockport, Evans, Batavia, Orchard Park and Spencerport. A house chimney was damaged by the downburst winds in Rochester. In Chili a woman was slightly injured while talking on the telephone when lightning traveled through the home's telephone line. Also in Chili, a house fire on Chili Avenue Extension was blamed on a lightning strike. The heavy rains that accompanied the storms resulted in flash flooding in parts of Lewis and Monroe counties. In the Rochester metro area, there were numerous reports of flooded roads and basements. In Turin, the flood waters washed out a portion of Fish Creek Road.
Thunderstorms during the evening hours focused over the northern sections of the Buffalo metro area. Heavy rain associated with the storms caused road closures and flooded viaducts. The winds from the storms also downed trees and power lines in north Buffalo, Kenmore and Tonawanda.
Strong thunderstorms accompanied the passage of a cold front during the early morning hours. The thunderstorm winds downed trees and limbs in Cambria, Niagara county, and Clarence Center, Erie county. Lightning ignited a fire in a Grand Island garage after striking a nearby tree, fence and power lines. In Avon, Livingston county, two dozen heifers were killed by a lightning strike. Also in Livingston county, lightning struck the 911emergency communications tower in Geneseo. Main communication was offline for several hours and rerouted through a nearby county.
Thunderstorms developed in a warm, moist, unstable air mass ahead of an approaching cold front. The thunderstorm winds downed trees and power lines in Harmony, Salamanca and Newstead. A home was damaged by a fallen tree in Salamanca.
A weak cold front crossed the area during the overnight hours. The slow moving thunderstorms that accompanied the front produced damaging winds and torrential rains. Trees and power lines were downed with scattered power outages reported. Roads were closed in Irondequoit and Ishua. Basement flooding occurred in Summerville, Leon and Jamestown.
Thunderstorm winds brought down numerous trees, utility poles, power lines and caused structural damage as a derecho crossed the region. There were also numerous reports of dime to nickel sized hail with isolated reports of one to one and a half inch hail over Wyoming and southern Livingston counties. Falling trees damaged buildings in Alden, Erie county, and Lockport and North Tonawanda, Niagara county. The winds caused structural damage in the town of Seneca, Ontario county, Niagara Falls, Niagara county, and Alden and Tonawanda, Erie county. A large billboard and a large motel sign were blown over in Niagara Falls. Up to 10,000 customers were temporarily left without power by the storm.
Deep low pressure tracked across southern Ontario and brought strong, damaging winds to the entire area. The winds downed trees and power lines. Over 100,000 customers were left without power. The falling trees and poles damaged homes and automobiles. Specific reports of damage were received from Shortsville, Pittsford, Batavia, Buffalo, Tonawanda, Jamestown, Attica, Avon, Sodus and Silver Creek. In Oswego, a 165-foot cell phone tower was toppled, destroying a county Sheriff SUV. In Stockton, 35 cattle were killed in a barn collapse. Barn collapses were also reported in Elma and Pittsford. Tractor trailers jack-knifed or were blown over in Victor, East Bloomfield, Lyons, Buffalo and LeRoy. Roofs were blown off houses in Rochester and Oswego. School districts in several counties closed. Several major radio and television stations were knocked off the air including Channel 13 in Rochester. At the Buffalo-Niagara Airport, a jet was turned by the wind. The wing struck a boarding bridge and the plane and bridge were damaged. The Buffalo Airport operated on backup generators for several hours. Numerous flights at both the Buffalo and Rochester airports were delayed. In Gaines, a double wide mobile home was split and overturned. A gasoline pump in Rochester was blown over. The gas spilled and ignited. Several other fires, though not started by weather conditions, were fueled and spread by the strong winds. The strong winds blew out windows in parts of Wayne and Monroe counties. One person was injured in Rochester being hit by flying glass. Another injury due to the storm occurred in Buffalo when a woman was blown over and suffered a broken leg. A 37-year old woman was killed in Victor when a tree fell onto her car as she was driving by. She suffered massive head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses said she had no time to even brake or swerve.
Low pressure over Ohio deepened as it moved across eastern Lake Erie and then across Lake Ontario. High winds buffeted the area downing trees and power lines and poles. Sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 70 mph were recorded. In Chautauqua county, several boats on Lake Chautauqua were damaged when they broke loose from their moorings. In Wayne county, orchards suffered damage as trees were knocked over and fruit blown off the trees. Apples intended for fresh had to be sold for juice at a lower price. Power outages were reported throughout the area. It was estimated that as many as 50,000 were without power at some point. In numerous locations, the falling trees damaged buildings and automobiles, for example--in Canandaigua and Geneva, Ontario county; Olean, Cattaraugus county; Medina, Orleans county, and Honeoye Falls, Monroe county.

The winds downed trees and power lines in West Falls (Erie county), Constantia (Oswego county) and Turin (Lewis county). The thunderstorms were accompanied by heavy rains of up to three inches which resulted in roads flooded and closed in Turin and Constantia. A weak tornado briefly touched down on the Fort Drum Military Base in Jefferson county. Only minimal damage to forest area occurred.
Thunderstorms that crossed the western southern tier region during the evening hours produced damaging winds, downing trees and power lines. Power lines were reported down in Findley Lake, Forestville, Arkwright, Hamburg and East Aurora. Trees were reported down in Silver Creek, Ellicottville, and Pomfret.

Scattered power outages were reported with those affected totaling several thousand customers. In Buffalo, a tractor trailer was blown over as it crossed an overpass on Ohio Street. The driver was not injured. The high winds caused ice pressure to damage several sections of the ice boom in the Buffalo Harbor at the mouth of the Niagara River.
Low pressure over the upper Midwest deepened rapidly as it moved to Quebec. The strong winds that accompanied the low downed trees and power lines across the eastern Lake Ontario region. Damage was reported in Hannibal (Oswego county), Watertown (Jefferson county) and Lowville (Lewis county). The strong winds funneled up the length of Lake Erie and produced a 51 knot gust at the Buffalo waterfront.
A cold front brought severe thunderstorms to the region during the afternoon hours. The thunderstorm winds downed trees and power lines and scattered power outages were reported. In Yorkshire, Cattaraugus county, a tree fell on and damaged a garage. Over the Niagara Frontier, the thunderstorms produced hail up to 3/4 inch in diameter in Grand Island and Niagara Falls.

Downburst winds accompanying thunderstorms across the southern tier and parts of the Finger Lakes produced isolated downed trees and power lines. Thunderstorms re-developed during the afternoon and evening hours. As many as 15,000 were without power in the southern tier for several hours. A falling tree struck a house in Fredonia. Gusts toppled signs along the Thruway. Several roads were totally blocked by fallen trees. Heavy downpours that accompanied the afternoon thunderstorms resulted in some poor drainage flooding in the Southern Tier.
Thunderstorms developed across the eastern Great Lakes region during the afternoon hours. The thunderstorms produced hail up to 1.25" in diameter in parts of Erie, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Wyoming counties. The thunderstorm downburst winds ripped down trees and power lines. Scattered power outages were reported. Several structures and automobiles were damaged by falling trees. Wind damage was reported in Randolph, Panama, Ellery, Chaffee, Cuba, Portageville, Dansville and Henrietta. The thunderstorms spawned two tornadoes. In the town of East Concord, Erie County, a weak tornado briefly touched down. Damage consisted of a portion of the back and roof of an outbuilding blown away, a pier tossed across a pond, and tree damage. Winds were estimated between 70 and 75 mph. Another tornado touched down in Belfast, Allegany county, and traveled 6.5 miles into the town of Angelica. The greatest structural damage occurred near White Creek Road in Belfast where a two-story home, garage, and barn were destroyed. Other damaged structures along the path included a silo, a second barn, and minor damage to a second home where the siding was ripped from an outer wall. Winds were estimated at 115-135 mph. No injuries were caused by either tornado.
Low pressure over Wisconsin deepened as it moved across Lake Superior and into northern Ontario. Strong winds accompanied and followed the passage of a cold front. The damaging winds affected the entire area, downing trees and power lines and causing some structural damage. Nearly 100,000 customers completely lost power with thousands others experiencing brief power outages. In Rochester, a roof was blown off a building supply store. In Groveland, a vehicle was towing a 17' sailboat on I-390 when the boat and trailer were overturned by the wind. In Portage, a train struck a tree that had fallen across the tracks. The train was damaged and could not continue. In Mendon, a two-story, 100-year-old barn was pushed over. In Lyndonville, a recreational trailer dealer sustained damage to a third of the inventory.
Low pressure over Indiana deepened as it moved northeast. The strong southwest flow was funneled up the length of Lake Erie and produced damage across the Niagara Frontier. Trees and power lines were downed. Structural damage was also reported in Erie and Niagara Counties.
An intensifying storm moved across the Great Lakes and lifted northeast to the St. Lawrence Valley. Very strong winds behind the low blasted the region with wind gusts exceeding 55 mph. Trees and power lines were downed by the strong winds. Hundreds of thousands were without power...some for several days. Fallen trees and limbs littered the area and closed roads. Numerous reports of damage to homes and automobiles were received from throughout the area. Driving bans and States of Emergency were declared in several counties. Numerous school districts were forced to close on the first and several remained closed through the beginning of the following week. In Monroe county, two injuries resulted from the high winds. A man was briefly hospitalized after gusts blew apart the trailer he was working in at the Greater Rochester Airport. Also in Rochester, a woman was blown from the sidewalk into the street where she was hit by an oncoming car. In Tonawanda, an inflated golf dome was torn to shreds by the high winds.
A three to five inch snowfall overnight of the 30th-31st turned to freezing rain during the morning hours. Ice accumulations of one-half to three-quarters inch occurred. Hundreds of thousands were left without power as the heavy ice build-up downed trees and power lines. Some areas were without power for up to 72 hours. Winds picked up and gusted to 55 mph. Trees and tree limbs fell blocking roads and damaging homes and automobiles. Tree damage included large and small limb breakage and bark damage as well as the uprooting of trees. States of Emergency were declared across the Niagara Frontier counties. East of Lake Ontario snowfall amounts of six to eight inches were followed by one-quarter to one-half inch of ice.
Deep low pressure over Lake Superior tracked slowly eastward to Quebec. A tight pressure gradient around the low produced strong winds over extreme western New York. The winds downed trees and power lines across the area. In Buffalo, a large falling tree crushed a minivan injuring the two occupants. Damage was reported in Buffalo, Lockport, and Royalton.
Strong winds around deep low pressure over Quebec downed trees and power lines across the region. No structural damage was reported however scattered power outages resulted across the western southern tier. Downed trees and lines were reported in Salamanca, Jamestown, Colden and Scriba.
Deep low pressure across Hudson Bay pulled a strong cold front across the region during the late afternoon. The strong southwest winds ahead of the cold front downed trees and power lines in Geneva, South Wales, Jamestown, Belfast and Dunkirk. Scattered power outages were reported.
Thunderstorms crossed the area during the afternoon hours producing hail up to 3/4 inch in North Tonawanda and Gates Center and damaging winds estimated to 68 mph. Trees and power lines were downed by the strong winds in Highland Park, Scriba, West Monroe and Watertown. In Watertown, one house sustained structural damage from a falling tree. In Clarence, Erie county, a husband and wife were also struck by lightning which hit a nearby tree. Both were hospitalized with burns to their feet and arms. Two nearby automobiles had damaged electrical systems and a third had a window blown out.
Thunderstorms moved across the area during the late night and early morning hours. A couple of the storms reached severe limits. In Angola, Erie County, one inch hail was reported. In Sodus, Wayne County, thunderstorms winds brought down a large tree that crushed a late model auto. The car was a total loss. County sheriffs also reported the winds downed power lines in Lyons.
Deep low pressure over the nothern Great Lakes moved northeast to Quebec and pulled a strong cold front across the area. The strong winds that accompanied the system downed trees and power lines. Sustained winds of 46 mph were recorded at the Buffalo Airport and sustained 51 mph winds were reported at the Rochester Airport. Specific wind gusts reported were: 63 mph at Buffalo, Erie county; 58 mph at the Niagara Coast Guard, Youngstown, Niagara county; and 61 mph at Elma, Erie county.
Deep low pressure over the western Great Lakes moved across Ontario to Quebec and dragged a cold front across the area. Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph were reported across the area with gusts up to 76 mph recorded. The strong winds downed trees and utility lines throughout the fourteen county area. Several hundred thousand customers were without power. Roads were blocked by downed trees. There were numerous reports of property damage from the winds, mostly from trees falling on buildings and cars. Specifically, this was reported from Carthage, Jefferson county, Geneva, Ontario county, Pittsford and Honeoye Falls, Monroe county, Perry, Wyoming county, Newark, Wayne county and Salamanca, Cattaraugus county. Four 40' high masonry walls of an school pool and gymnasium under construction in Macedon, Wayne county, were toppled by the wind. Large plate glass windows were blown out in the Grant Building in Jamestown, Chautauqua county. A barn was blown down in Gorham, Ontario county. In Fairport, Monroe county, a winter carnival had to be cancelled because the high winds tore apart a large tent erected for the carnival. In Martinsburg, Lewis county, the high winds toppled a barn, killing nearly fifty head of cattle inside. Specific measured wind gusts were: 76 mph in Oswego, Oswego county, 74 mph in Sodus, Wayne county, 71 mph in Rochester, Monroe county, 66 mph in Forestville, Chautauqua county, 64 mph in Randolph, Chautauqua county, 65 mph in West Seneca, Erie county, 62 mph in Sherman, Chautauqua county, 61 mph in Alexander, Genesee county, 59 mph in Weedsport, Cayuga county, and 58 mph in Niagara Falls, Niagara county and Albion, Orleans county.

The strong pressure gradient on the back side of the low combined with rapid pressure rises resulted in very strong northwest winds across the region. The damaging winds downed trees and line throughout the area. Specific reports of damage were received from Cuba, Olean, Jamestown, Buffalo, Amherst, Darien, Lyonsdale, Lima, Spencerport, North Tonawanda, Medina, Fulton and Newark. Schools were forced to close. The Red Cross opened several shelters throughout the area. Structural and property damage was also reported, specifically in Cassadaga, Stockton, Lily Dale, South Dayton, Buffalo, Phelps, Hall, Olean, Allegany, Wellsville, Geneva, Jamestown and Lakewood. Nearly a hundred thousand customers were without power across the region. Over 50 crews from the Ontario Hydro Power Company in Canada assisted in power restoration. Power outages lasted from several hours to nearly a day in some spots. Flights on the morning of the 12th were either delayed or cancelled at both the Buffalo Niagara International Airport and Rochester Airport. Specific wind gusts recorded were: 66 mph at Buffalo; 63 mph at Cuba, Yorkshire and Dunkirk; 61 mph at Jamestown; 59 mph at Niagara Falls, and 58 mph at Olean.

Hardest hit was Centerville, Hume, Granger and Caneadea. Several towns in the western southern tier declared States of Emergency. Damage to roads was extensive. In Allegany county, Routes 23, 27, 36 and 3 were closed for days.

Trees and lines were downed in Cattaraugus, Erie and Ontario counties with scattered power outages reported. In Shortsville, Ontario county, an 80-foot tree tore a hole in the roof and second story wall of a home on High Street.
