Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Stanislaus County
A cold trough from the Gulf of Alaska dropped into Northern California which brought a high impact winter storm to the region. Widespread precipitation, low snow levels of 500 to 2500 feet, and strong and damaging wind resulted. Impacts ranged from fallen trees, downed power and phone lines, trecherous driving conditions including chain controls and highway closures due to wind and/or snow, multiple accidents and spin outs due to snow, widespread power outages, damaged property due to wind, and injuries. Sacramento County was investigating several homeless related deaths due to cold weather; however, no reports have come back linking the two together.

Lightning. Lightning hit a tree in Oakdale, CA, causing a fire in nearby electrical transformer and resulting in a power outage. Three homes and a few vehicles were reported damaged.

Thunderstorm Wind. Straight line winds brought down trees at Coffee Rd. and Athens Rd. A large tree with shallow roots fell on power lines and brought down 12 power poles.

Tornado. A severe thunderstorm produced a tornado with multiple touch downs that moved through the north section of Denair, CA touching down around 1:54 pm PST and ending around 2:15 pm PST on Sunday, November 15, 2015. There were no injuries. About 21 homes were impacted, 2 of them with major damage, but most with minor roof damage. Many fences were knocked down. Numerous trees and tree branches were brought down, including several large trees and numerous sections of trees in walnut groves. Power lines were knocked down causing local power outages. The multiple touch down path was about 3 miles long. The damage path was about 175-200 yards at the widest point.

Heavy Rain. Modesto Airport recorded 1.57 inches of rainfall on the 13th, which was a record for the date. This broke the old record of 0.76 inches set in 1962. The heavy rain caused minor street flooding, primarily as a result of clogged storm drains.||Strong, gusty winds peaking at 47 mph at Modesto Airport brought down hundreds of trees, large tree branches, and power lines resulting in power outages in Stanislaus County. Falling trees also badly damaged numerous cars and houses.
