Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Alameda County

A weak to moderate atmospheric river event impacted the SF Bay Area November 8th and November 9th, bringing moderate to locally heavy rain and gusty winds. A low pressure system from the Gulf of Alaska deepened over the NE Pacific and made landfall in the OR/WA area November 8th. This system tapped into subtropical moisture from the Pacific Ocean and dropped substantial rainfall over the North Bay and into the immediate Bay Area, with accumulations up to 4 inches in coastal North Bay. A strong low-level jet also developed off the coast, bringing gusty winds in excess of 30-40 mph to the Bay Area. Several reports of roadway flooding were received, along with some downed powerlines and trees. Monterey OEM also reported a mudflow on the River Fire burn scar, which forced a road closure.

A series of storm systems with a subtropical moisture stream swept through the region between the 20th and 22nd of March. This subtropical moisture was also associated with an upper level trough and surface cold front. These systems resulted in minor roadway flooding and debris flows as well as downed trees and power outages due to gusty winds.

A slow moving cold front moved through the San Francisco Bay Area and Monterey Bay Area on Thursday, December 15, 2016. The front moved through the area slowly, producing moderate to locally heavy rain for several hours which resulted in nuerous reports of flooding, especially for the Northern San Francisco Bay Area. Also, this storm system produced locally strong winds with gusts greater than 50 mph. These winds brough down drought-stressed trees which damaged power lines and cares.
