Power Outage in Carlinville, IL

Widespread wind damage between Womac and Honey Bend. Multiple small to medium sized trees snapped off. Also, several trees were uprooted near the intersection of Kirkland and Sumpter Roads. One large tree was blown down blocking Illinois Route 108 near intersection with Standard City Road. On Barnett Road, several power poles were blown down between Leefers Road and South Atwater Road. An unoccupied camper was blown over at a house on Illinois Route 108 near intersection with South Atwater Road. A machine shed was destroyed on Dickey Road with the debris blown approximately a quarter of a mile to the east southeast. No deaths or injuries were reported.

A weak tornado was observed and photographed by several individuals including a storm chaser and severe storm spotter. This damage survey is based on video and times provided by the individuals along with estimates from radar. The weak tornado moved west to east across the northern portions of Benld producing damage to trees and power lines and minor damage to several homes. Damage information was provided by emergency management officials. The tornado was rated EF0 with a path length of 1.82 miles and a max path width of 30 yards. No deaths or injuries were reported.

A tornado touched down over the Country Classic Cars business northeast of Staunton, IL. Many videos surfaced showing a funnel develop and pass over Interstate 55. No damage could be seen west of the interstate, creating the initial damage to a carport at the business, and then cutting an approximately 50 yard path through the middle portion of the second storage shed on the property. The tornado proceeded east, depositing several pieces of sheet metal and wood onto Old Route 66 and fields to the east. Despite visible power flashed in videos, power lines looked untouched. Arching likely occurred when metal sheeting was thrown across the lines. A debris path could be seen strewn for several hundred feet to the northeast. A house, couple of farm buildings and trees were damaged on the south side of Tall Timber Road. Another structure to the north side of Tall Timber Road, at the end of Adden Road, was also damaged. Several pieces of debris could be seen in the field to the northeast of Adden Road and to the west of Two Mile Road. However, no damage was assessed past the field, where it is likely the tornado dissipated. Additional videos from Mt. Olive show a long rope funnel ascended above the town with no damage to the community. Overall the tornado was rated EF1 with a path length of 1.39 miles and a max path width of 50 yards. No injuries or deaths were reported with this tornado.

A tornado first formed on the southwest side of Sawyerville, destroying one garage and damaging two cars inside. Damage was rated EF1 in this area. Several outbuildings sustained minor to moderate damage as well as the tornado moved through the southern portions of town. Most damage was to trees and loss of roof covering on homes and outbuildings. Several power poles were also downed. Further to the northeast, the tornado caused similar damage in the Lake Kaho area. The tornado crossed Interstate 55 near Panther Creek Road, continued northeast crossing into Montgomery County about 2.2 miles northeast of Interstate 55.

Thunderstorm winds caused a wide swath of damage across Macoupin County. Numerous trees, tree limbs, and power lines were blown down in Modesto, Palmyra, Girard, and Carlinville. In Carlinville, a retirement home and an apartment building sustained minor to moderate roof damage.

Thunderstorm winds blew down power lines in Brighton. In Shipman, the winds caused siding and window damage from wind driven one inch diameter hail. In the Benld and Staunton areas, several trees were blown down.

Despite photographic evidence of a large tornado northwest of Litchfield, only minor damage to power poles and one barn was observed. The tornado initially touched down in Macoupin County on Litchfield Road about 1.3 miles west of the Macoupin/Montgomery county line. It travelled to the northeast only causing minor tree damage rated EF0 in Macoupin County. It then crossed the Macoupin/Montgomery county line about four tenths of a mile south of North 18th Avenue. Most of the area where the tornado occurred was bare farm fields which did not have any damage indicators. The path length of the tornado in Macoupin County was 2.11 miles with a max path width of 20 yards. The damage for this segment was estimated to be EF0. Overall, the entire tornado path length was 3.98 miles with a max path width of 50 yards and a maximum damage rating of EF0.

Thunderstorm wind destroyed an 80 by 60 foot pole shed near the intersection of 2400N and 1900E. Debris from the shed took down nearby power lines and debris was sticking out of a home that is east of the shed.

Thunderstorm winds blew down 15 power poles onto Illinois Route 159 just north of Mansholt Road. Route 159 was closed for about 12 hours while the poles were being replaced. Additional power poles were blown down just north of Illinois Route 138 on Whitefield Road.

Thunderstorm winds caused widespread damage from four miles west of Standard City to about a mile north of Standard City to about 5 miles northeast of Standard City. West of Standard City several outbuildings and grains bins were destroyed and several power poles were snapped off along Standard City Road. North of Standard City, three empty rail cars were blown off the train tracks. Further to the north and east, several small outbuildings were damaged or destroyed and power lines blown down. At the intersection of Boston Chapel Road and Waggoner Road, the thunderstorm winds blew down a large tree onto the road.

West of Standard City several outbuildings and grains bins were destroyed and several power poles were snapped off along Standard City Road. North of Standard City, three empty rail cars were blown off the train tracks. Further to the north and east, several small outbuildings were damaged or destroyed and power lines blown down. At the intersection of Boston Chapel Road and Waggoner Road, the thunderstorm winds blew down a large tree onto the road.

Numerous power poles were blown down along Bates Road and Lampie Road.

Ice accumulations across Macoupin County were generally around 1/4 inch. Tree limbs were reported down and there were scattered power outages.

Numerous trees, tree limbs and power lines were blown down countywide due to the remnants of Hurricane Ike.

The line of severe storms moved across southern portions of Macoupin county. A microburst occurred just south of Bunker Hill. Numerous trees, tree limbs and power lines were blown down. Also, a mobile home 4 miles east of Brighton was damaged by two fallen trees and another home one and a half miles south of Bunker Hill was damaged by a fallen tree. Three of four roofs were torn off of the relatively new dugouts at the Bunker Hill High School baseball fields. Small outbuildings and barns sustained minor damage in the area due to the microburst winds.

In Gillespie, a large tree fell onto a house causing moderate damage. Also, numerous trees, tree limbs and power lines were blown down between Gillespie and Mount Olive.

The line of severe storms moved across southern portions of Macoupin county. A microburst occurred just south of Shipman. Numerous trees, tree limbs and power lines were blown down. Also, a barn door was blown off two miles south of Shipman.

Numerous tree limbs were blown down around town. Also, a 55 foot tree was blown over crashing through a fence and into a back yard. The tree was alive but hollow. Several power lines were blown down as well.

The County Sheriff reported power lines down on the north side of town.

A couple of mobile homes were damaged and outbuildings destroyed near Medora. Some power poles and a couple of large trees were down in Brighton.

The County Sheriff reported large tree limbs and power lines down in Bunker Hill and Benld.

County emergency management personnel reported the roof blown off a shed in Modesto and a large utility building destroyed southwest of Modesto. A machine shed was destroyed east of Palmyra and power lines were down south of Virden and in Gillespie.

Emergency management personnel reported wind damage at several location in Macoupin County. In Scottville, the roof of a barn was blown off and a grain bin destroyed. In the Modesto area, 16 power poles and were downed putting power lines on Highway 111. Several trees were also down blocking roads in town.

Emergency management personnel reported trees and power lines down blocking Rt. 4 in Staunton. A tree was blown onto a house in Virden.

Storm spotters reported 1 inch hail north of Brighton. A lightning strike near Staunton set fire to 3 large oil tanks which contained several thousand gallons of oil. It took about 45 minutes to get the fire extinguished. Wind gusts downed some trees and power lines in Bunker Hill.

Amateur radio spotters reported signs damaged along Interstate 55 near Benld. Trees and power lines were downed in Mt. Olive.

Storm spotters and local officials reported numerous trees and power lines down in the Modesto and Virden areas. One home was damaged in Virden by a downed tree and a grain bin was blown about 700 feet.
