Power Outage in Chadron, NE

Kings Canyon RAWS site reported this peak wind. Widespread power outages in the city of Chadron with reports of roof damage and wind damage to buildings.

Conditions measured at the Chadron Airport and Nebraska Department of Roads sensors. COOP observer located three miles southwest of Chadron measured 12.0 inches of snowfall in addition. The strong winds and snow also contributed to area power outages in the Crawford area.

An estimated wind gust of 70 mph was reported four miles west of Chadron. Tree branches were snapped off. Power lines were down. A couple of trailers were overturned at a mobile home park.

Four to six inches of snow was observed throughout the county. Northwesterly winds gusting as high as 40 mph caused considerable drifting snow and visibilities less than a half mile. Several roads were closed. Chadron officials declared a snow emergency on January 12. Scattered power outages were reported south of Chadron.

Hail damage to many cars, shattered windows at Walmart parking lot. Many business signs were blown out or had holes in them from the hail. Many street signs and several power lines were down. Three trailer homes sustained major damage. One was flipped on its roof and the other two were blown to pieces into a nearby field. Orange construction barriers tossed 0.75 miles from the highway.

The second winter storm in 11 days struck much of the Nebraska Panhandle, particularly oversouthern sections, producing around 5 to 11 inches of snow. Nearly a foot of snow fell in the Kimball,NE, area, with around 8 inches in Scottsbluff, NE. All roads in Scotts Bluff county were closed, aswas Interstate 80 in the southern panhandle. Some power outages were reported as well.

Heavy snow and gusty winds caused spotty power outages and road closures in parts of the northern Nebraska panhandle. 6 inches of snowwas reported in Harrison and Chadron, NE.

Severe thunderstorm moved across Dawes County producing hail stones up to ping pong ball size. Due to outflow wind gusts, Chadron Public Radio reported power outages to 450 customers covered by the Nebraska Public Power District.
