Episodes

December 23, 2022

Strong winds developed from the west and northwest across the North Carolina Piedmont in the wake of an arctic cold front. Winds gusting from 40 to 45 mph, and occasionally as high as 50 mph resulted in a few downed trees and power lines, along with quite a few tree limbs. One tree fell on a home near Matthews in Mecklenburg County. Minor damage was also reported to multiple structures across the area.

September 15, 2018

Tropical Cyclone Florence made landfall on the 15th and moved slowly west while weakening through the 16th. Gusty winds resulted in a few trees and power lines falling across portions of western North Carolina, with some trees falling on vehicles and structures.

February 24, 2016

Very strong west/northwest winds developed across the portions of the northern foothills and western Piedmont during the afternoon in the wake of a cold front. Numerous trees were blown down across the area, some of which fell on and took down power lines, resulting in scattered power outages. Some minor roof damage also occurred, including sections of roof peeled off small businesses in Lowell (Gaston County) and Shelby (Cleveland County) and off a mobile home near Love Valley (Iredell County).

February 15, 2016

Very light freezing rain, freezing drizzle, and freezing mist developed across portions of western North Carolina during the morning, in assocation with low pressure developing along a warm front across the Gulf Coast states/Tennessee Valley. Despite the very light nature of the precipitation, due to about a week of unseasonably cold weather, the precipitation froze to surfaces very quickly, and roads became very slick, resulting in numerous traffic accidents. Although precipitation rates increased during the evening, as the warm front gradually pushed north into the area, temperatures warmed above freezing in many locations, allowing much of this heavy precip to fall as rain. Most locations saw less than a tenth of an inch of ice accretion, although some locations across the foothills and far northern Piedmont approached a quarter inch, with a few downed trees, lines, and power outages reported.

January 22, 2016

Light snow developed around daybreak across the southwest Piedmont of North Carolina in association with an area of low pressure. The snow became moderate to heavy throughout the morning, and eventually mixed with and changed to sleet. By early afternoon, a couple of inches of sleet and snow had accumulated across the area. Snow mixed with sleet and freezing rain continued into the afternoon and by late afternoon, the transition to sleet and freezing rain was complete. Total accumulations ranged from 1-2 inches of sleet and snow near the South Carolina border to as much as 4 inches of sleet/snow north of I-85. Up to a tenth of an inch of ice also accumulated on top of the snow and sleet, resulting in very hazardous driving conditions and scattered power outages.

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
