Cheyenne Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
A confirmed tornado began approximately 12 miles W of Albin at 6:42 PM MDT. The tornado damaged a single-family residence and destroyed a farm outbuilding. Minimal shingle damage was was visible at the home, with trees and power lines remaining intact on the property. Debris from the home and outbuilding was thrown several hundred yards to the southeast. Hay bales weighing up to 1400 pounds were moved between one quarter and one half mile from their original location. Further southeast along the track of the tornado, 8 wooden power poles were snapped. The damage then became more sporadic along the track as the tornado moved over mainly open fields before dissipating approximately 9 miles WSW of Albin at 6:50 PM MDT.
Strong microburst winds produced some damage to mainly the western side of Cheyenne, including a report of a trailer blown into a power pole. Some|damage to signage occurred along with damage to a dugout building at a local ballpark. Some hail up to 3/4 inch in diameter was also reported.
Episodes
A collapsing line of showers and thunderstorms over the Snowy mountain range generated a long-lived gust front. This front produced very strong winds as it raced east across southern Albany, Platte and Laramie counties. A peak wind gust of 90 mph was recorded at the Laramie Airport. Numerous trees and several utility poles were toppled. More than 2000 customers were without power.
Thunderstorms produced large to very large hail and damaging winds across portions of southeast Wyoming. Golf ball size hail driven straight-line winds estimated as high as 90 mph caused extensive damage to homes and businesses at Pine Bluffs. Many trees and power lines were toppled throughout the town. Clogged drains from hail and stripped leaves with torrential rainfall flooded many roads and intersections in town.
A slow moving winter storm system progressed eastward through the area. Due to the rather warm conditions ahead of the system, the precipitation changed from rain to snow. Heavy rainfall on the already saturated ground from the plentiful seasonal snowfall and slow moving storms caused localized flooding for parts of the area. High winds also accompanied the rain and snow. The combination of high winds and heavy snow caused locations in and near Bosler, Laramie and Chugwater, in southern Platte and central Albany county, to lose power. The only life lost from this storm 14 calves.
