Episodes

December 6, 2013

An arctic cold front pushed into Northwest Mississippi during the morning of December 6th, 2013. Widespread rain was already occurring due to the combination of abundant mid-level moisture, an enhanced upper level jet and an upper level disturbance moving through the area. As a result of the cold front, temperatures plummeted and turned rain over to freezing rain and sleet across Northwest Mississippi. The wintry precipitation tapered off during the late afternoon and evening hours on December 6th, 2013. The corridor from Coahoma to DeSoto Counties, received around a tenth of an inch of ice and a trace of sleet. Most of the ice accumulations occurred on trees, power lines, and elevated surfaces. As a result, a few trees and power lines fell due to the ice as well.

December 13, 2000

Freezing rain fell across the northwest corner of Mississippi. Numerous tree limbs fell due to the ice with some homes losing power for a short period of time.

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
