Episodes

June 11, 2023

A weak cool front drifted south into portions of North Texas, extreme Southeast Oklahoma, and Western Arkansas during the late afternoon through the evening hours on June 11th. Weak perturbations in the northwest flow aloft enhanced large scale forcing aloft near the front, with surface convergence within a very unstable air mass along the boundary contributing to the development of widely scattered severe thunderstorms across Red River County Texas into Southern McCurtain County Oklahoma and Little River County Arkansas. These storms produced large hail over Southern McCurtain County, and damaging winds which downed a power line in Bogata in Southwest Red River County before weakening by midnight.

December 15, 2008

A shallow but very cold artic airmass spilled southward into the Southern Plains into the Lower Mississippi Valley. This airmass resulted in surface temperatures hovering near to slightly below freezing across portions of northeast Texas. A warm...moist airmass overran this shallow, colder air near the surface with light rain developing across the county. The light rain became freezing rain across portions of the region with ice accumulations below one quarter of an inch reported. The ice collected on trees and power lines as well as elevated bridges and overpasses. There were no power disruptions but a few minor accidents were reported across portions of northeast Texas.

June 14, 2008

An inverted trough extended from the surface low pressure system south of Wichita Falls, Texas and reached to the northeast through southeast Oklahoma and central Arkansas while a nearly stationary frontal boundary extended from west Texas through the surface low over northwest Texas and into northeast Oklahoma and north Arkansas. Storms developed out ahead of the activity up north into southwest Arkansas and the band between the trough of low pressure and the stationary boundary pushed south. The storms produced strong wind which downed trees and power lines.

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
