Power Outage in Clay Center, KS

Strong winds were reported on the gust front. Power was also out in Clay Center.

Reports from around the county indicate that between one quarter and one half inch of ice accumulated on tree limbs and power lines across mainly the northwest half of the county.

A machine shed was destroyed 6 miles south of Clay Center. Numerous trees and power lines were also down in the city of Clay Center.

Report from EM estimated another .20 to .25 of ice accumulation from freezing rain Sunday night into early Monday morning. Report was from Clay Center. Some sporadic power outages remained early Monday morning from the cumulative impact of the ice accumulation over the weekend.

A tree limb fell on power line.

Wind gusts estimated. Power was out.

Wind gusts around 60 mph caused numerous tree limbs and power lines down through out the county.

Numerous power lines were blown down in the town of Clay Center.

Several large trees were blown down. The roof was blown off of a building. Hog sheds south of Clay Center and metal utility sheds were blown into power lines. Sporadic power outages were reported by the local Electric Cooperative.

A second tornado struck when it touched down to the west southwest of Clay Center. Damage surveys indicated that the primary damage that occurred was to powerlines and outbuildings.

Several homes and outbuildings were damaged when a tornado touched down northwest of Oak Hill. Porches, roofs, and windows were observed to have sustained the most damage at several of the residences. At one farm, the center pivot of an irrigation system was knocked over, as were several trees and power lines. One home was deemed a total loss, two camping trailers were completely destroyed, and four outbuildings were completely destroyed.

Ice between half of an inch and one inch thick was reported to have accumulated across the county. Several house fires were reported as a result of downed power lines. Approximately 2500 residents of Clay County was left without power the night of the 10th and morning of the 11th. Westar Energy lost 80 power poles to ice during the storm. Businesses and schools across the county were closed for safety concerns.

Sustained strong winds blew down a 12 inch diameter tree in Clay Center. Several other trees and tree limbs were reported to have fallen down across the city. Trees were also blown down along Old 82 Higway approximately 1 mile south of Wakefield. Power lines were reported down in Morganville as well. Sustained wind speeds estimated to be around 35 mph for several hours during the afternoon.

Strong winds blew down power lines. Also a tree was blow down onto a parked car doing minor damage. Asecond tree was blown down onto the roof of a house causing some roof damage.
