Concordia Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
A power pole was snapped.
This broad but weak tornado damaged several outbuildings and power lines along its path. End point based on an extrapolation of a video and radar data.
Reports including photos from social media show ice accumulation on tree limbs and power lines to between one half and three quarters of an inch across the county. The Concordia ASOS ice sensor also reported 0.44 of ice during this event.
Concordia also reported power outages.
Concordia ASOS reported a 75 mph wind gust. Also multiple large trees uprooted onto streets making them impassible. One tree fell on a house causing damage. Power lines also fell and pulled meters out from houses. In Jamestown a 3 foot diameter hackberry tree blew onto a house.
Episodes
A slow moving storm system brought a prolonged period of freezing rain to the state between January 14th and 16th. Parts of the state of Kansas received over 1 inch of ice while areas within the NWS Topeka county warning area received less. Some parts of east central Kansas received between one quarter and one half inch of ice while areas of north central Kansas also received up to around one half inch of ice through Jan 16th. Air temperatures were critical during this event and actually warmed to around 32 degrees on Jan 15th which served to limit the ice accumulation on power lines and trees which helped to minimize impacts across the area.
During the early morning hours of May 22nd a line of thunderstorms moved through central KS causing very isolated large hail. As the line moved into far northeast KS it was able to produce wind damage to power poles and an outbuilding.
On October 13, 2012 scattered thunderstorms produced strong winds that caused some minor damage to areas in Cloud, Ottawa, and Marshall Counties. The extent of the damage were some power lines down in Minneapolis, Kansas and a couple large diameter tree branches down in Frankfort, Kansas. A few 1 inch hail stones also fell in Cloud County.
A mixture of freezing rain and freezing drizzle produced ice accumulations that downed tree limbs and caused some power outages. Slick roads were reported and resulted in at least 1 minor vehicle accident.
