Power Outage in Cynthiana, KY

Scattered tree and power line damage from high winds was observed in Cynthiana and across Harrison County. Minor structural damage was also observed.

Multiple trees and power lines were blown down across the county as a result of high winds.

Snowfall of 1-2 inch accumulated with blowing snow and strong wind gusts of 30-40 mph. Rapidly falling temperatures resulted in slick roads and significant travel impacts. Treacherous travel conditions were noted throughout December 23rd, a busy holiday travel day. Wind chills of -25 were observed on the morning of the 23rd. Extreme cold strained the power grid and rolling blackouts were implemented by utility companies.

A quarter inch of ice accumulated, causing a few trees to come down. About 700 customers were without power.

There was a tree on a power line on Highway 62.

The NWS in conjunction with Harrison County Emergency Management determined the area northeast of Cynthiana along Salem Pike had 70 to 80 mph wind damage. Besides trees being split and uprooted, a double-wide trailer was picked up off blocks and thrown 75 yards. A large deck structure on the front of the double-wide was thrown 40 to 50 yards to the east. There was 1 minor injury. Further east from the trailer was a large metal outbuilding that had roof and doors blown off. Several more trees were uprooted or split. One home had roof and siding damage. Another residence had their garage blown in, and a power pole was split and bent severely towards the east. A single family residence's front porch pillars were blown in. The other debris was blown 1/4 mile downwind. Peak winds were 80 mph. The duration of the thunderstorm wind damage event was 5 minutes.

A sleet and snow mix brought 2 to 4 inches accumulation through mid morning Tuesday, January 27. Freezing rain developed later that afternoon and continued through dawn Wednesday. Ice accretion reached 3/4 of an inch. Snow, developing after dawn Wednesday, added another 1 to 2 inches.|A couple died from carbon monoxide poisoning Thursday, January 29th. A portable generator used as to heat the powerless home is the suspect.
