Several waves of thunderstorms developed along a stationary frontal boundary draped across central Illinois from the evening of August 6th into the early morning of August 7th. The hardest hit area was northern Vermilion County where 65-70mph winds brought a few trees and power lines down and hail up to the size of quarters was observed. Another severe cell caused wind damage in Logan County.

September 5, 2014

A cold front triggered strong to severe thunderstorms across parts of central Illinois during the late afternoon and evening of September 5th. Many of the storms produced strong winds of 60 to 70 mph in a corridor from Scott and Cass County northeastward to Logan County. Numerous trees, tree branches, and power lines were blown down in this area, with some of the most significant wind damage occurring in the town of Virginia in Cass County.

March 18, 2012

Isolated thunderstorms impacted east-central Illinois during the morning of March 18th. Lightning struck a power pole, knocking down power lines across a road in Danville.

May 23, 2011

Low pressure tracking along a nearly stationary frontal boundary brought severe thunderstorms into southeast Illinois during the afternoon of May 23rd. The storms originated in southwest Missouri, then moved northeastward in the form of a bow echo into east-central and southeast Illinois. Widespread winds of 60 to 70 mph downed numerous trees and powerlines along and southeast of an Effingham to Danville line.

Molitas Rd Danville… no power on our street! Called and they told us we did have power. Pretty sure they don’t know what they are talking about.

My power is out at 4998 Mt. Hill Rd., but the power company has my address as 2345 Mt. Hill Rd. 2 miles away. How can I get it turned back on if they cannot find my house? When I call it says due to unusually high call volume call back. I am not showing on the outage map

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
