Power Outage in Danville, VA

Thunderstorm winds created a swath of damage through the city of Danville. Numerous trees and utility poles were snapped or blown down. Two vehicles were totaled by fallen trees, and a window was blown out at the Danville Regional Hospital. Over 6000 homes lost power due to the damage to utilities.

Thunderstorm winds blew close to fifteen trees down within the City of Danville. One tree fell across Milton Avenue. Around ten trees were blown down along South Main Street between the Dan River and Route 58 (a few of these near Danville Community College). Another tree fell near the intersection of Colquohoun Street and Dame Street. The final tree feel near the intersection of Loyal Street and Lynn Street. A lightning strike struck an apartment complex, caused a fire, and resulted in fire damage to a 12-unit apartment structure in Danville City. In addition to the structure fire, another lightning strike struck a tree a few blocks from the apartment fire. This caused the tree to fall apart and crush a car and take down power lines.

The Danville ASOS rain gage (DAN) failed due to a power outage during the fierce storm, but the backup site measured 6.00 inches for October 11th (24-hour period ending at midnight). This is the highest daily rainfall ever recorded at Danville with data back to 1916. The previous record was 5.81 inches on August 27, 2008.

Brentwood Community (KVADANVI13) mesonet site reported an hourly precipitation amount of 4.66 inches between 3:04 and 4:04 PM local time with a daily total of 7.68 inches when the power failed. Almost all the rain fell after 11:30 AM. 4.66 inches in 1 hour exceeds the 1000-year (.001 annual chance) precipitation frequency uncertainty interval listed in NOAA Atlas 14 for Danville.

The Danville Fire Department reported multiple trees and power lines were blown down on the west side of the city. At least six trees were blown down in the vicinity of Riverside Road and Piney Forrest Road. Two trees were blown down on Cumberland Drive. Trees and power lines were blown down onto Mount Cross Road. Damage to the siding of the Advance Auto Parts store on Westover Drive was also reported.

Strong cold front interacted with an abnormally moist airmass to cause severe thunderstorms to developed across Southside Virginia. Winds from these storms damaged numerous trees, utilities, several vehicles and outbuildings. Thousands of customers lost power due to the damage. There were also a few instances of large hail.

Winds associated with Tropical Storm Zeta caused damage and power outages in southwestern Virginia, concentrated close to border with North Carolina. Wind gusts reached 30-40 knots during the peak of the storm. Numerous trees were blown down by Tropical Storm Zeta, with many falling on homes, power lines, and blocking roadways. A thunderstorm closely following Zeta contributed to some of the wind damage.

A cold front approached the region and atmospheric conditions were moist and unstable. This was just the right combination for the development of showers and storms. Some of these storms increased to severe levels and caused damaging winds that downed trees and power lines.
