Decatur Power Outages Caused by Weather

Events

May 16, 2023 - Thunderstorm Wind

Trees and power lines were blown down near the intersection of Garrison Road and Targum Road. Time was estimated from radar.

Neel - Neel
March 24, 2023 - Tornado

A tornado touched down on Highway 55 in Falkville and tracked generally northeastward. Initially, the tornado snapped trees and a small power pole in a yard on Highway 55. Farther to the northeast, the tornado did considerable roof damage to a barn at a residence on Chappell Road, and uprooted trees near the intersection of Chappell Road and Bert Stinson Road. The tornado then tracked along a largely wooded area, before snapping and uprooting trees on Nature Trail. There, the tornado also created roof damage to a small log cabin style home. ||Farther to the northeast, in a heavily wooded area to the north of Nature Trail, the tornado uprooted and snapped a long swath of trees nearly continuously before emerging into an open field, where it continued to snap and uproot trees along its path. In the open field, the tornado completely destroyed a large pole barn that contained 4x4 posts, some of which were anchored into the ground with cement. The walls of the barn were made of exterior metal sheeting with 2x4 wooden studs, which were toe-nailed into the 4x4 posts, and accompanied by a metal truss system. The barn contained 10,500lb hay bales which were blown downstream. A very large, old oak tree was uprooted adjacent to the barn. The width at its base was estimated to be 5 feet. ||The tornado continued to track generally to the northeast, snapping and uprooting trees along Wilson Mountain Road, which continued along the northeast adjacent and along Blankenship Narrell Drive. On Cottonwood Lane, trees were uprooted and snapped. One tree fell on an RV at a residence. From there, the tornado moved into a largely inaccessible heavily wooded area.

July 26, 2020

An isolated thunderstorm developed over Decatur and also over the adjacent waters of Lake Wheeler (Tennessee River system) between 1740-1800 LST. A well photographed and reported waterspout developed around 1753 LST and lasted several minutes. The waterspout appeared as a narrow elephant trunk tube in numerous photos and videos sent into social media or directly to the National Weather Service in Huntsville. From the videos and photos received, the waterspout became a landspout tornado at times on the eastern shore of Lake Wheeler, just a few hundred yards south of the U.S. Highway 31 causeway. Due to reporting requirements, this will be logged as a tornado with an Unknown EF rating since no damage was reported. On the opposite side of Lake Wheeler, near the Bank Street district of Decatur, a small downburst knocked down portions of a large tree onto power lines. Photos of the storm from a distance also indicated a rain foot typically noted by storm spotters which correlated very near the location of the damage.

October 31, 2019

A strong cold front dropped temperatures 20-25 degrees from the lower 70s into the upper 40s to lower 50s from around 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM CST. A line of showers and thunderstorms accompanied the front, which were followed by a dramatic wind shift from south to west-northwest. Sustained wind speeds of 20-25 mph with frequent gusts of 35-40 mph were reported. Due to saturated soils from recent rainfall, even wind gusts of 35-40 mph were sufficient to topple several trees and limbs in north Alabama. Reports of trees and in some cases, power lines, were reported in Colbert and Morgan Counties.

September 25, 2018

A thunderstorm knocked down trees and power lines in Morgan County, including near the Eva community.

February 9, 2016

A powerful cold front and upper level disturbance produced bands of snow showers during the evening of the 8th through the evening of the 10th. Snowfall amounts of an inch or less were received in north central and northeast Alabama, with a dusting to a half inch in northwest Alabama. A few isolated spots on Brindley Mountain in Morgan and Marshall Counties downstream of a lake effect band off Wheeler Lake received 1-2 inches.

August 10, 2014

A cluster of thunderstorms produced intense rainfall and isolated wind damage in the city of Decatur during the late afternoon hours. An amateur radio automated weather station measured 3.62 inches from these storms in less than 2 hours in southeast Decatur. In fact, most of the rain fell in 30 minutes. One ten-minute period recorded just below an inch of rain (a rate of nearly 6 inches per hour). Flash flooding resulted in downtown Decatur and nearby residences. A brief period of thunderstorm winds knocked power lines down at one location, and tipped over an overhead canopy at a gas station.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
