Episodes

March 6, 2017

A strong low pressure center and tight pressure gradient and eventually a deeply mixed boundary layer produced strong surface winds. Winds also were very strong behind the associated cold front late in the day on the 6th. Winds picked up again on the 7th fanning residual fires. Many fires were started by downed power lines, many from weakened connections from the January ice storm. The fire in Ford county was the result of a brush pile in Dodge City that had not been fully extinguished before the dry, warm winds began. ||Statewide, grass fires shut down I-70 between Russell and Sylvan Grove, and fires were reported in Clark, Cheyenne, Commanche, Ellsworth, Hodgeman, Ford, Meade, Pratt, Rawlins, Rice, Reno, Smith, Stevens and Rooks counties. Residents of Wilson in central Kansas were told to evacuate homes due to fears of fire moving north of I-70.

December 13, 2015

A powerful upper level storm moved out of the southern Rockies and produced widespread rain, some sleet and heavy snow. Heavy rainfall occurred late on the 12th but ended by sunrise on the 13th. The precipitation began again during the morning on the 13th and started as rain before transitioning to sleet and finally snow by the afternoon. During the late afternoon and evening thunder accompanied the snow and became very heavy. Most of the precipitation ended shortly after midnight.

December 10, 2007

A significant ice storm moved into Central and part of Southwestern Kansas during the evening of Monday, December 10th, and continued through the evening of Tuesday, December 11th. A powerful storm formed over the Southwestern U.S. early Monday, December 10th, and moved northeastward across Oklahoma during the day Monday and into Tuesday. A cold dome of arctic air was entrenched over Kansas, allowing for moist air from the Southwestern storm to override the cold air. Freezing rain and sleet resulted, basically east of a Dighton to Cimarron to Meade line. From to inch of ice accumulations were reported throughout the listed area. Many trees and limbs were downed, as well as were numerous power lines, along with reported power outages.

March 12, 2006

High wind buffeted the area from 1331 through 1600. Several large tree limbs were blown down in Syracuse. Cimarron reported a 60 mph wind gust at the Jr/Sr High school. Shingles and many tree limbs were blown down in Johnson. A 60 mph wind gust was recorded at the Hugoton airport at 1402 CST. A 58 mph gust was reported at the Pratt airport at 1410 CST. The Dodge City ASOS at the airport experienced a 50 mph gust also. Liberal had a 59 mph gust at the airport at 1435 CST. Power lines were blown down in Kinsley. The Elkhart airport had a 58 mph gust at 1508 CST. The visibility dropped to 1 mile at times in blowing dust/dirt at the Dodge City airport when the wind gusted to 58 mph at 1536 CST. Several fences were blown down in Ashland. Four inch diameter limbs were broken in Medicine Lodge. Back in Dodge City, a twelve inch diameter tree branch broke and crushed a vehicle on Central Street. Other car windows were broken out in the same general vicinity. There was also some shingle damage in Dodge City.

November 27, 2005

Snow began falling north of I-70 late in the afternoon on Sunday the 27th, and then worked its way south and southeast. This storm caught many travelers by surprise, this being the last day of the Thanksgiving weekend. By Monday morning on the 28th, 2 to 3 inches fell in a 30 to 50 mile band from Wakeeney to Kinsley. Most locations reported around 2 inches, with 3 inches of new snow reported at both Wakeeney and 6 miles north-northwest of Larned in Pawnee County. Strong north to northwest winds at 30 to 50 mph accompanied the snowfall, causing numerous travel problems due to deep drifting and icing up of roads. In addition, snow and blowing snow caused very poor visibility conditions, resulting in a 25-car pile up along I-70 in northwest Kansas. I-70 closings started at Goodland first, and then worked west to Colby, followed by Hays and finally Russell. The Fort Hays State University coliseum was converted into a make-shift hotel, as motel rooms were scarce. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported most accidents could have been prevented by just slowing down, but after numerous accidents, including a fatality accident near Russell, they started closing the interstate. Many power poles were blown down, and power companies near Wakeeney reported over 300 power poles down Sunday night. Along US Highway 50 just east of Sprearville in Ford County, 51 power poles were blown down. The small community of Ransom in Ness County had additional problems to contend with, when the power outage caused their water supply to be shut down when the electric pumps to the city wells were without power. Snowfall amounts of 1 inch or less were reported from many additional locations in southwestern Kansas that night.

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
