Official weather observers reported 7.5 inches of snow 2 mile west of the Dubuque Regional Airport. Significant blowing and drifting snow was widespread over the area with white out conditions at times lingering through the day of February 12. Power outages from down power lines, power poles, and tree branch damage were widespread.
Episodes
A line of severe thunderstorms tracked across portions of eastern Iowa during the evening hours of July 23rd and into northwest Illinois during the early morning of Sunday July 24th. Storms produced mainly damaging winds along their path, with numerous reports of structure, tree, and power line damage from Buchanan County Iowa east into Jo Daviess County Illinois. The Dubuque County Airport measured a 67 MPH wind gust as storms passed.
Severe thunderstorms developed across a good portion of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois on the afternoon of Tuesday August 24th, 2021. A corridor of very strong winds was observed along the Highway 20 corridor from Fairbank IA, to Hazelton IA and to Manchester IA, where numerous reports of damage to trees, homes and power outages were received. Hail up to golf ball size was also observed in Manchester IA.||Storms continued to track south and east, with an outflow boundary producing strong winds into portions of northwest Illinois including the Quad Cities metro. Additional reports of wind damage were received across northwest Illinois, with a 66 MPH wind gust measured at the Savanna, IL AWOS.
Thunderstorms developed during the evening hours along a cold front moving through Iowa and became severe as a mesoscale low developed in East Central Iowa. A wake low developed just behind the storms and provided sustained winds over 26 knots (30 mph) that lasted for 20 to 30 minutes. The storms and wake low moved east along U.S. 20 through Northeast Iowa and Northwest Illinois. The storms were quite prolific in producing pea to just under .75 inch hail. Significant damage occurred on the south side of Dubuque, Iowa with numerous trees and power lines down and a radio tower mangled. In Jo Daviess County Illinois, a continuous area of damage occurred from the flats near East Dubuque, Illinois through Menominee and Vinegar Hill townships. Numerous trees were either uprooted or decapitated with many buildings (farm and garage) damaged or destroyed.
Event summary for 9/7/01: (For additional details, see individual entries for the date).A mesoscale convective system, or MCS, developed in central Iowa and progressed across eastern Iowa and far northwest Illinois. Bowing segments along the leading edge of the MCS produced damaging winds up to 70 mph, isolated reports of large hail up to the size of a nickel, and locally heavy rain. High winds downed numerous trees and power poles, and damaged structures. One person was injured after thunderstorm winds blew a tree down on top of them.
