A deepening low pressure system over the Northern Plains moved northeast across the Northland late on the 24th. Fueled by strong southerly flow, the thunderstorm complex began to bow as the cold front advanced to the east. This line of storms produced damaging winds which lead to many trees downed and power outages across northern Minnesota.

Multiple rounds of storms were observed across northeastern Minnesota the afternoon of the 23rd into the early morning hours of the 24th. The first round developed in association with a warm front during the afternoon hours of the 23rd and produced damaging wind gusts leading to downed trees and power lines. The second round developed during the early morning hours of the 24th and led to a few isolated reports of tree damage and a measured gust to 62 mph at the Duluth Airport.

August 5, 2019

Two rounds of storms affected the Northland on the 5th with a complex during the morning hours producing wind damage followed by additional development during the afternoon hours as the cold front moved through. Morning storms produced areas of tree damage and downed power lines from the Leech Lake area eastward to the I-35 corridor with recorded gusts of 61 and 62 mph at area airports. After the first complex of storms moved through, conditions again became unstable ahead of the advancing cold front. Additional storms developed ahead of the front, but did not mature and become severe until they crossed into Wisconsin.

July 26, 2019

Storms developed ahead of a cold front moving across northern Minnesota on the afternoon of the 26th. These storms contained large hail and damaging wind gusts as they moved across the Minnesota Arrowhead with hail reports up to ping pong ball-sized and trees and power lines downed due to the winds. The storms remained severe as they moved over western Lake Superior and across the Bayfield Peninsula of northwestern Wisconsin.

June 29, 2018

California avoids outages after day of grid-straining heat - WDIO.com – With you for life

California kept the lights on during extreme heat, as operators of the state’s electricity grid continued to warn that unprecedented demand on energy supplies could force them to periodically cut power to some customers. The California Independent System Operator on Wednesday thanked residents and businesses for heeding another “flex alert,” a request to reduce electricity consumption during peak evening hours. Another flex alert was issued for Thursday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. as temperatures are expected to spike again. The head of Cal-ISO says miscommunication led to a small number of power outages Tuesday as the system was under great strain.

Community Lighthouses' powered by the sun and volunteers - WDIO.com – With you for life

Global warming is producing more extreme weather. That can mean extended power outages in places like New Orleans. A grassroots network is launching “Community Lighthouses” to meet the challenge. These solar-powered electricity hubs can provide a lifeline after a disaster, enabling neighbors to recharge phones and equipment and refrigerate medicines. Each lighthouse will be supported by a team of volunteers familiar with their neighborhood. Organizer Broderick Bagert said organizers felt powerless as the city struggled to deliver basics after Hurricane Ida last year. He says instead of questioning why someone else doesn't take care of the problem, "the real question is, ’why don't WE?'"

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
