An area of low pressure near James Bay Canada lead to a strong cold frontal passage across the middle Atlantic Saturday evening November 19. Northwesterly winds increased substantially immediately following the cold frontal passage, with several reports of gusts generally in the 45 to 55 mph range over New Jersey. These strong wind gusts persisted around 48 hours, through Monday November 21. The Northeast Philadelphia ASOS site recorded a peak wind gust of 51 mph at 13:40EST on November 21.||Following the cold frontal passage Saturday evening November 19, low pressure developed over New England, and provided a sufficiently cold and moist air mass to produce the seasons first significant snowfall. Snow overspread portions of the middle Atlantic late Saturday evening November 19, shortly after the cold frontal passage. By 01:00EST Sunday November 20, some of the higher terrain of northeast Pennsylvania received around two inches of snowfall. The highest amount as of this time was 2.2 inches in Salisbury Township (Lehigh county), Pennsylvania.||The snow continued to fall into Sunday morning November 20. Around 08:00EST, amounts up to around 6 inches were observed across the higher terrain of Carbon and Monroe counties. From here, snowfall amounts tapered to a dusting toward the Delaware Valley. The highest snowfall amount was 5.5 inches near Blakeslee, Pennsylvania, as reported by a trained spotter.||Some power outages were recorded from downed trees as well in Northeast Pennsylvania with PP&L doing cleanup.

March 17, 2015

Gusty northwest winds following a cold frontal passage affected the Poconos during the afternoon of the 17th. This was the second time in three days that strong winds affected the Poconos. Peak wind gusts averaged around 50 mph and knocked down weak tree limbs and wires and caused isolated power outages. The peak wind gust on the 17th was 50 mph in Mount Pocono (Monroe County). The strong, gusty northwest winds followed a cold frontal passage during the middle of the morning on the 17th. The pressure gradient or difference between an approaching high pressure system over the Northern Plains and the low pressure system associated with the cold front in New England was maximized during the afternoon and slowly weakened as winds diminished that evening.

March 15, 2015

Gusty northwest winds around an intensifying low pressure system south of the Canadian Maritimes affected the Poconos during the afternoon and the first half of the evening on the 15th. Peak wind gusts averaged around 50 mph and knocked down weak tree limbs and wires and caused isolated power outages. Pennsylvania Power and Light reported 115 customers lost power. The peak wind gust on the 15th was 50 mph in Mount Pocono (Monroe County). The strong, gusty northwest winds were caused by an increasing stronger circulation around an intensifying low pressure system south of the Canadian Maritimes. The low pressure stalled for a while during the afternoon as it became stronger. During the evening, it stopped intensifying and slowly moved off to the northeast. This permitted a surface high pressure ridge from the Ohbio Valley to move closer and end the strong winds.

November 18, 2014

The pressure gradient (difference) between a strong high pressure system over the lower Mississippi Valley and a strong low pressure system east of James Bay, Canada produced gusty northwest winds over the higher terrain of the Poconos during the morning of the 18th. Peak wind gusts averaged around 45 mph and knocked down weak tree limbs and power lines. Pennsylvania Power and Light reported about 500 of its customers lost power. Peak wind gusts included 46 mph at Mount Pocono (Monroe County). As the high pressure system continued to move closer to the area and the low pressure system farther away in Canada, winds slowly diminished during the afternoon and more rapidly at night.

October 26, 2014

Strong gusty northwest winds around 45 mph knocked over some weak tree limbs and wires over the higher terrain of the Poconos during the second half of the morning and early afternoon on the 26th. Some isolated power outages occurred. The peak wind gust in Mount Pocono (Monroe County) was 46 mph.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
