An upper-level disturbance triggered a cluster of severe thunderstorms across south-central Illinois during the morning of May 31st. The storms primarily impacted locations south of the I-70 corridor as they tracked eastward, producing wind gusts of 65-70mph. Numerous trees and power lines were blown down across Effingham, Clay, Jasper, Richland, Crawford, and Lawrence counties.
In the wake of a powerful storm system that brought copious amounts of snow and ice to central Illinois, strong Canadian high pressure built into the region from February 2nd through February 4th. Actual air temperatures dropped below zero during the overnight hours, while wind-chill readings fell as low as 15 below zero. Due to an extended power outage during this period of bitterly cold weather, a man in rural Dieterich died as a result of hypothermia.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms developed ahead of a cold front during the afternoon of June 27th. Damaging wind wind gusts and heavy rainfall accompanied the stronger storms. In addition, lightning strikes caused a structure fire in Shelby County and damaged power poles in Jasper County.
A line of strong to severe thunderstorms moved across east central and southeast Illinois during the afternoon and early evening hours of the 27th. The storms blew down numerous trees and power lines. Several structures, mainly outbuildings, also sustained wind damage.
A winter storm brought a second period of freezing rain in as many days to southeast Illinois. Periods of sleet were reported as well. Clay, Effingham and Jasper counties were most significantly impacted, receiving one quarter of an inch of glaze. Sleet up to one half inch was reported in Douglas county. The icing caused tree and power line damage and resulted in numerous traffic accidents.
