Weather observers across Effingham County measured around one half an inch of sleet along with 1 to 2 inches of snow and between one half and three quarters of an inch of ice. The heavy glaze of ice downed tree limbs, causing widespread power outages across the county. Snow-covered and icy roads resulted in numerous traffic accidents.

Numerous trees, tree limbs and power lines were blown down countywide. In Altamont, a greenhouse was destroyed. In Effingham, some of the fallen trees caused minor damage to a couple of homes. Near Mason a large tree fell onto a pole barn damaging a large section of its roof. In Heartville, the Emergency Operations Center had roof damage when the winds peeled back part of the roof. A semi was blown over just south of Effingham on I-57. No injuries were reported.

An upper-level disturbance triggered a cluster of severe thunderstorms across south-central Illinois during the morning of May 31st. The storms primarily impacted locations south of the I-70 corridor as they tracked eastward, producing wind gusts of 65-70mph. Numerous trees and power lines were blown down across Effingham, Clay, Jasper, Richland, Crawford, and Lawrence counties.

In the wake of a powerful storm system that brought copious amounts of snow and ice to central Illinois, strong Canadian high pressure built into the region from February 2nd through February 4th. Actual air temperatures dropped below zero during the overnight hours, while wind-chill readings fell as low as 15 below zero. Due to an extended power outage during this period of bitterly cold weather, a man in rural Dieterich died as a result of hypothermia.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms developed ahead of a cold front during the afternoon of June 27th. Damaging wind wind gusts and heavy rainfall accompanied the stronger storms. In addition, lightning strikes caused a structure fire in Shelby County and damaged power poles in Jasper County.

A strong winter storm moved out of Southern Plains and into the Ohio River Valley. This system brought significant icing to the southeastern portions of Central Illinois on January 25th. Also, significant sleet accumulation was reported in numerous locations along and south of Interstate 70. Effingham County reported an inch of sleet as well as over a quarter inch of ice accumulation. There were numerous reports of power outages, downed tree limbs and traffic accidents in all of these counties. There were no reports of serious injuries or fatalities.
