Power Outage in Elizabethtown, KY

A narrow, but powerful, EF-2 tornado developed quickly in the Cecilia area late Sunday evening, as a cluster of thunderstorms briefly interacted with an east-west oriented outflow boundary from earlier storm activity. The storm first caused tree damage along Long Grove Rd near Tabb Rd. A property near this intersection had several trees uprooted and snapped as well as limbs down. On the south side of Tabb Rd. roofing material from the northern side landed on that property. An RV that had been along a row of trees south of Tabb Rd was forced onto its side as well.||The tornado continued southeast across cropland. Drone footage indicated a nice swath of damage in the corn. The tornado then affected two homes on the end of Basham Lane. The first house had a carport thrown to the right of the track into an open field. An AC unit was flipped on its side at the house and a brick facade wall came off the house structure. Farther southeast, the strongest winds occurred as the tornado pulled up the wide front porch of a house and then peeled the roof back. Parts of the roof landed upstream of where the tornado caused the damage. A gazebo behind the house was thrown in a counter clockwise fashion back to the other side of the house. Two parked trucks were shifted from their location as well. Damage continued in the corn field southeast of property, with drone footage indicating some jagged movement of the tornado on the ground.||It continued just past another row of trees where it impacted a barn before the tornado lifted.||The survey drove to several other sites across the county...along Black Branch, Hayden School, Rineyville, and Locust Grove roads. The rest of the damage had trees falling generally toward the south, in line with straight lined winds on the order of 80-90 mph.

There were a large number of power poles broken along South Wilson Road between W.A. Jenkins Road and Hutcherson Lane.

Power poles and wires were down along Woolridge Ferry Road between KY 434 and KY 313.

An EF-1 tornado touched down near Long Hollow Road and snapped or uprooted several trees which resulted in the road being blocked and powerlines coming down. The tornado continued to the northeast and did sporadic wind damage. It approached Rineyville-Big Springs Road where it hit a couple of farm buildings and resulted in wall and roof damage. The width of the tornado was fairly narrow as a nearby farm building was untouched/unharmed. The tornado continued to race off to the northeast and caused sporadic tree damage. The tornado eventually lifted in a heavily wooded area near the Cochran family farm.

A few trees and power poles were down on Salt River Road.

Around a half inch of ice accumulated in Elizabethtown, Vine Grove, and Radcliff. Extensive tree damage occurred. Power outages were also reported. There was a fatal accident on Interstate 65 northbound at mile marker 91 in Elizabethtown.

A large tree fell on power lines and completely blocked Hardinsburg Road near the 12000 block.

There were nearly 6,000 without power around the county.

Privately owned weather stations measured wind gusts in the 50 to 60 mph range. These high winds resulted in downed trees, power outages and other minor structural damage.

Local law enforcement reported power lines down in the area.

A NWS employee reported power lines down across Main Street at West Point. Several miles away, at nearly the same time, a 59 mph wind gust was measured by the ASOS at the Fort Knox airport.

Several trees were downed in Ratcliffe. Power outages were also reported.

An NWS storm survey confirmed an EF-1 tornado with maximum wind speeds of 100 to 105 mph touched down about 2 miles east-northeast of Glendale. The tornado formed just west of Interstate 65 and crossed the highway, the Hardin County Fairgrounds, and lifted just east of the intersection of First Union Church Road and Sportsman Lake Road. On the fairgrounds the tornado struck a large livestock barn as well as the fairground's restaurant. The roof of the restaurant was thrown westward on top of a livestock barn. Metal siding was thrown 250 yards and several trees were snapped and uprooted. Near the end of the path there was roof damage to a one story house as well as downed power lines.

Freezing rain brought ice accretions of 1/2 to 1 inch through early morning Tuesday January 27th. Rain changed to snow after dawn on the 28th. An additional 1 to 2 inches of snow fell Wednesday morning. The loss of power attributed to the icing led to the death of a woman in her unheated mobile home Thursday, January 29th.

The ASOS at Fort Knox measured wind gusts up to 65 mph. Broadcast media reported that part of the roof of the Elizabethtown fire department was blown off. Numerous trees and power lines were also reported down across the county.

A winter storm began with freezing rain. This left a layer of ice about one inch thick on surfaces. Two to four inches of snow and sleet fell on top of this. A hangar collapsed at the airport in Elizabethtown, destroying a few airplanes. A few structures failed, mainly service station canopies or outbuildings. Some businesses reported ceiling or other minor building damage, but no major structural damage was reported at businesses or residences. Numerous residents were without power for an extended period of time. The weight of ice brought down many trees and large limbs in the area. Roads were dangerous or impassable due to the ice, sleet, and snow cover. Other driving problems resulted because of fallen trees or limbs blocking roads.
