A National Weather Service survey team found that very strong thunderstorm winds caused significant damage across southwestern Gilmer County along a path around 5 miles long and 3 miles wide. The damage began near the intersection of Highway 76 and Crossroads Church Road and extended east southeast to around the intersection of Old Highway 5 and Howard Simmons Road. Numerous trees and power lines were blown down or snapped with several falling on homes and other structures. Significant damage was observed in the Coosawattee River Resort area. No injuries were reported.

The Gilmer County Emergency Manager reported between a tenth of an inch and a quarter of an inch of ice accumulation on trees, power lines and other elevated surfaces across the county due to freezing rain and drizzle. Over a half inch of ice accumulated on elevated surfaces in the southeast portion of the county. Numerous trees and power lines were downed across the county. Over 30000 residents were without power at the peak of the storm during the evening of the 16th through the morning of the 17th.

Freezing rain began just after sunrise on the morning of the 25th, accumulating on elevated surfaces, bridges, and overpasses through the morning and afternoon hours. Widespread amounts of 0.10 to 0.25 inches of freezing rain were reported. The slick roads resulted in numerous automobile accidents and power outages across the area.

The tornado tracked on the ground, paralleling Georgia Highway 136, in an east-northeastward direction for only 1.5 miles before lifting near the intersection of Camp Branch Road and Georgia Highway 136. The damage path was determined to be 300 yards wide with maximum winds estimated to be 90 mph. The most significant damage resulting from the tornado was to the Shady Grove Church, which sustained minor damage from falling trees. No other structures were damaged. A deep, negatively-tilted upper trough was rotating rapidly through the southeast U.S. from the afternoon of January 31st into the early morning hours of February 1st. A very strong low-level jet of 60-70 mph or greater was noted just above the surface. Surface winds of 45 to 60 mph accompanied this system , particularly as a broad area of showers swept across the area during the evening hours and shortly after midnight. These winds resulted in a number of trees and power lines being blown down, especially across north Georgia counties. In advance of this system during the afternoon of the 31st, strong easterly winds across north Georgia, much of which was located in a cold air wedge, caused additional wind damage.||Damage during the afternoon and evening of the 31st was generally confined to Gilmer, Union, Gordon, White, and Pickens county. Gilmer, Pickens, and Bartow counties appeared to suffer the worst damage during this portion of the event with more than 20 trees and several power lines down in Gilmer county and at least six trees and a power line down in Pickens county, one blocking Jerusalem Church Road. A home just southeast of Pine Log in Bartow county also suffered minor roof damage when several shingles were blown off.
