What is Power Outage?
Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.
What Causes Power Outages?
- Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.
What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?
- Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
- Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
- Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
- Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.

A damage survey conducted by the National Weather Service in Fort Worth found that a downburst occurred in Cooke County. Widespread wind damage occurred to mobile homes and outbuildings, and several permanent buildings sustained roof damage. Mobile homes were rolled several times by the strong winds. Several metal industrial buildings and airport hangars were damaged...some extensively. Fifteen planes at the Gainesville Municipal Airport were damaged as they were pushed into each other. The roof of a motel was blown off just west of Interstate 35, and a porch of another motel just east of the Interstate was removed. Interstate 35 was shut down in both directions due to debris covering road. Power lines, signs, and trees were also knocked down. Garage doors were blown inside out. Winds speeds were generally 60 MPH, but likely reached as high as 90 MPH at some points in the damage path.
