Farwell Power Outages Caused by Weather

Events

August 14, 2020 - Tornado

A storm chaser filmed a tornado and the local sheriff provided information about the storm damage in Pope County. The tornado tracked northeast for 1.2 miles, clipping the town of Farwell. Several trees were downed, large tree branches were broken and several power poles were blown down.

August 1, 2011 - Thunderstorm Wind

Numerous trees and power lines were blown down along a sixteen mile long path of damage with a swath about six to eight miles wide that occurred from Farwell and northern Starbuck, to the southern side of Lake Minnewaska and the southeast side of Glenwood. An electric transmission company had three metal truss towers collapse about 2.5 miles east of Lowry. The towers were 187 feet tall, with 1700 feet of spacing between each tower. Using the enhanced Fujita scale, damage indicator 24 (ETL) applies very well; its lower bound for a degree of damage 6 is 116 mph (101 knots). The towers were rated for 120 mph. Eight miles to the southeast of the towers, on the southern fringe of the swath, an observer with a home weather station two miles south of Glenwood measured 91 mph before the power went out. The anemometer was mounted ten feet above the top of the house, and was above the tree tops. Windows were blown in and shingles ripped off. The roof of an adjacent house was blown away, and numerous trees were toppled or broken.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
