A cold front sweeping through the area on June 17th was aided by abnormally warm temperatures and low level moisture to help spark afternoon showers and thunderstorms across eastern Kentucky. Several of these storms grew to be strong to severe, resulting in downed trees and power lines from damaging wind gusts. One particular storm also yielded golf ball sized hail in the town of Fallsburg in Lawrence County.
An intense low pressure system crossed into the Ohio Valley during the early morning hours on the 13th, with a strong line of thunderstorms aligned along a surface cold front. A tightened pressure gradient formed over eastern Kentucky, inflicting strong synoptic winds outside of convection. The Greenup County Airport measured a wind gust of 43 MPH and a mesonet in Lawrence County measured a non-thunderstorm gust of 47 MPH. Falling trees and limbs resulted in isolated power outages.
