Episodes
On the evening of July 9th, intense thunderstorms developed rapidly along a warm front draped from northwest to southeast across the area. There were two rounds of thunderstorms, the first being discrete, rotating storms called supercells. These supercell thunderstorms dropped large hail across portions of western Illinois (Mt. Sterling area) and also across the western St. Louis metro area. Hail in excess of 2 inches was noted in both of these supercells. Over time, the storms congealed into a large complex of thunderstorms known as a mesoscale convective complex (MCC). This line of storms contained damaging, sometimes destructive winds as they quickly pushed southeast across east-central Missouri into southwest Illinois. The worst damage was noted from Rensselaer, MO southward to Perry, MO, where straight-line winds of 90 mph were found. This same line of storms also affected the St. Louis metro area, bringing widespread 60-70 mph winds across the metro causing many large tree limbs to fall and many to be without power.
An Ice Storm hit parts of Northeast, East Central and Southeast Missouri on Martin Luther King Weekend. The areas hardest hit were across Washington, Jefferson and the northern half of St. Francois County. Numerous power outages were reported with almost the entire town of DeSoto, MO being without power for several hours. There were also transportation issues, however they were minimized due to almost all schools and businesses closing on Friday, the first day of the event.
Strong cold front moved through the region with plenty of lift, moisture and instability. Numerous severe storms developed and raced east across forecast area. There were numerous reports of large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes. Also, because of a tight gradient with this system non-thunderstorm winds gusted in excess of 40 mph in a number of locations. Gradient winds gusted to 53 MPH at Jefferson City Memorial Airport, to 62 mph at St. Charles Smartt Airport, to 59 mph at Spirit of St. Louis Airport, and to 59 mph at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. Several power lines and trees were blown down by the gradient winds in Callaway County. The gradient winds caused minor roof damage to Heritage Primary School in Wentzville. Also, the winds broke a window at the school. The gradient winds blew 3 vehicles off of the road near intersection of I-270 and Highway 364 and blew down a large tree in Oakville.
Light freezing rain and sleet fell across southeast Missouri the weekend of December 8th into the early part of the next week. From 1/8 to 1/4 inch of ice accumulated along with light amounts of sleet. Travel was disrupted across the area, but overall the region fared well with little damage and few power outages reported.
A bow echo severe thunderstorm moved rapidly across north St. Louis County downing countless trees, power lines, and causing minor structural damage. Several homes were damage by downed trees in Hazelwood, Ferguson, Florissant, and Jennings. The storms from the 19th and 21st knocked out electric service to an estimated 700,000 buildings across the St. Louis Metropolitan area. Power was not restored in some areas for a week to ten days. Food in refrigerators spoiled and had to be thrown out. Area hospitals reported a sharp increase in gastrointestinal illnesses, most likely from people eating spoiled food. The Red Cross, Salvation Army and other service organizations stepped in to supply food, water and shelter where needed.
